I was searching the web for real affordable SET amps and I am really excited to have found these:

1. Affordable SE amps from Bulgaria - http://amp.dir.bg
Looks really cool for their price. Anyone heard them before and like to comment? The owner even winds his own transformers.

Also, I am considering getting one of their 6C33C amps. Has anyone heard 6C33C tubes before and like to enlighten me on its sound characteristics? The owner mentions that it sounds like 300B at a much lower cost and double the power.

2. Edison kit allows you to switch between SE and PP -
http://www.hi-fidelity.co.uk/edison/html/intro.html

3. Affordable Italian kits -

Would like to hear your comments if you have heard any of the above.

1/ Mind that 6C33C and 6080 (small 6AS7) are ment to be (if one may say so) voltage regulators. But they will probably sound fine (given their low output resistance wich make the transformer easy), atleast the 6AS7 model (donno about linearity of 6C33, but asumes it is alike a 6336 on drugs)

2/And alows you to use different connections of tube (pentode/ul/triode)and different tubes (300B among the EL34/6L6 bunch), all with minor and documented modifications.

3/...

4/ Pile up parts for something like a trioded EL34/6L6 with a EF86 driver and a 125 universal OPT (or parafeed). Not top of the crop, but cheap as dirt.

The first site, Audio Mirror also has another pair of monobloc amplifiers:

"based on 6080 power triodes or their Russian military analogues. This is an audiophile tubes very similar to well known 2A3 tubes. The difference is only in heater supply. 6080 is indirectly heated triode delivering 15W per channel at 4 ohms or 8 ohms load. Frequency response is from 30Hz to 31kHz (±1dB). Input stage is designed with 6SN7 super sounding triode connected as SRPP. Driver stage is based on the same triode. This is silver wired amp. with gold-plated input and output terminals. Fitted with well matched loudspeakers this amplifier offers amazing sound quality".

You may want to check out this 6080 tube and compare against the 6C33C tube. I know the 6C33C is used more and more (is it really cabable of 15 Watts per tube/channel? or how about the 6080?)

Or you can get the ET Paramour when it comes out. 2 Parallel feed 2A3 monoblocs (kit) for $400 has me waiting not very patiently...

Rickyn,
I just heard my friends Lamm ML2(?) which sounds super, they used the same 6C33C tubes. The story is these tubes are used on the Russian Mig's. Would also like to hear more on these Mirror amps. They looked like a good deal... SCOTT

I have read about the Paramours but I am in Singapore and using 240V but Doc B has 120V only.

What is the significance of using voltage regulators as power tubes? Any advantages or disadvantages?

Also don't quite understand your point number 4.

6C33C-B's are used on, among other amps, the BAT VK-60; Joule Electra VZN-80, 100, and 160; Graaf GM200; and the Lamm ML-2s. There are probably a couple of others as well.

wow, I gotta take my next holiday in Bulgaria!!! Heard their wine is okey too....
For that price I'd buy enuff to biamp, and upgrade the output trannies. (simply can't believe the trannies are any good at that price, then again, perhaps they get super deals and simply have great components and sell it cheap. I've heard many stories of companies who had to tripple their prices because people wouldn't buy cheap stuff cause they can't believe it's any good. When they trippled prices, the stuff sold in bunches, even tho it was the exact same as when it sold for 1/3...)

Better contact them first before going to Bulgaria, posted on April 28, 2000 at 07:33:04

I sent an email to the owner (email address from their website) around the time I posted my first article in this thread. No replies so far.

Better check them out first.
