Don't waste your time. The Russkis know how to make tubes, because of the military. And they can make GREAT tubes -- including the new "Sovtek" (actually Reflektor) 2A3 and the new Svetlana 5u4G. As for amps, there are real problems -- mainly of materials and supply but also of the more general inability of Russians to stay sober and make stuff that the rest of the world wants. Does anyone want to buy Russian cars? Watches? Clothes? How would a Russian manufacturer find good transformers? Who could punch out a decent chassis? Where are the rubber grommets going to come from that used to be made in Armenia? How much money would he have to pay the Russian mob for "protection"? Get the picture. It's a miracle they can make such great tubes. Me? I buy the tubes while I can.

I stumbled across this company's web site some time ago.

I haven't a clue as to build or sound quality, but if any inmates live in the St. Petersburg area, it would be interesting to hear a report.

I've linked to a picture of the preamp, but the SET amp is also beautiful.

Unfortunately, Sam Tellig probably couldn't review them anyway, because I believe Stereophile has a requirement that the components have U.S. dealers.

Thanks for the link. The photos look intersting, but I wonder about the products. Are they well-finished? I remember getting a tube amp made in the Ukraine a few years ago -- the finish was so awful that I never even plugged in the amp. I also remember seeing a Russian tube preamp at a hi-fi show in the early 90s. Dennis Had plugged it in and proptly electrocuted himself. There are great Russian tube designers -- but so far as I know they all emigrated. Victor Khomenko. Vladimir Shushurin. Yakov Aronov. And Alex Nikitin, the designer of much of the Creek geer.
