The Damned - Phantasmagoria

Any of you cats heard this sucker?

(MCA - MCAD 22139 - Special markets)

Doom Gloom in it's finest hour.

I guess.

Actually it is pop/gloom/rock/punk/undescribable music.

Pretty frikkin good, actually.

If you like the Psychedelic Furs and John Foxx and Thomas Dolby and 4 out of 5 doctors, this is for you.

Actually, this is an excellent cd and well worth seeking out, fellas.

Dave

I have and love that one!!!!!

Saw the Shadow Of Love video on MTV once and was just taken with it!! I set out to get it but the store didn't have it, so I left with their Live at Shepperton cassette - not quite the thing I was looking for, but it was kinda cool, but not cool enough for me to own it again, I think! I played Phantsmagoria with the last week or so for a friend of mine, side one anyways. Had the cassette (long gone), then the cd, now the vinyl. The Damned vinyl is up there in price too!! $25 big ones for that Phantasmagoria!!! Worth every penny!

Are you familiar with Duran Duran's Tiger Tiger instrumental on Seven and the Ragged Tiger? Trojans from Phantasmagoria reminds me of that one for some reason. And I thought I was the only one who liked the Damned, or at least that one record!!

Did you ever hear their very first LP ? Most of their "fans" would never recognize them on that one. VERY dark sounding and lacking their later pop sensibilities.

Same thing goes for Ministry, which was an "unknown" local band here for quite a while. I have their first 12" called "Cold Life" as issued on WaxTrax ! Records. It's kind of a bad arty new wave dance thing. They were a very different band back then. Compared to their most recent psuedo - industrial / grunge stuff and even their earlier "poppy" stuff like "halloween", "Cold Life" is utterly lame and forgetable.

I saw the Damned when they toured back in about 84 or 85, but Captain Sensible was out of action. You can tell that they really missed him. Sean

Agree with you about the first couple of Psych Furs albums. I've turned a lot of people on to them that had only heard their later stuff and thought they were just a wimpy synth pop band. I still like all of their stuff but I got into them on that first release and followed the progression.
