When the school year begins, the college student activity clubs plan their events. For volunteering, we at UC Santa Cruz defaulted to beach cleanups.

Yeah, yeah, I sat on the beach, so sand got on my shorts. Yeah, yeah, beautifying the beaches felt good. But c'mon, you know full well that these were opportunities to expand the dating pool.

On these beach cleanups, of course you talked about music. And in Fall 1991, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Give It Away" frequently came up. Apparently, Nina Hagen had told RHCP's Anthony Kiedis that instead of hoarding material goods, emptying your closet was liberating. Thus, RHCP came up with the title, "Give It Away."

 This album was produced by Rick Rubin, whose direction shows. The final stages of recording took place at a house where Harry Houdini used to live. Rubin then had the band focus and simplify (flea isn't as hyper-kinetic, for example), and used fewer studio tricks/processing.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik was a staple of the 1991-92 school year, with "Under The Bridge" becoming a massive hit.

 These guys have had some pretty great radio singles over the years.




Any truth to the stories that these guys would have oral sex on stage? A record shop worker swore he saw them doing it at a show he attended. I've seen some photos on line that maybe that's what was going on. Then there was that time they jumped off stage and knocked a woman down in the audience and one of the guys was telling at her to suck him as she lay on the ground when security broke it up. Supposedly it was a "publicity stunt".
