Giant Sand - Almost the Politician's Wife from The Love Songs album 1988.

Giant Sand, like Calexico are bands based in Tucson, the town I grew up in. I didn't know about them when I lived there, probably because they weren't formed yet. This was around the time I was working for the son of a retired Gambino family member at Paulos' restaurant. Nice steak house and it got me a start as a dinner cook. Later I worked at Redwood Gay 90s (shortly thereafter they changed the name) another Tucson restaurant with a reputation as a place where mobsters might be hanging out. We used to spend lots of time at the Hoagie House - a decent sandwich shop with a bar and pool tables and some time down the road at the Bashful Bandit. Lots of fun and plenty of good times but the future didn't really look too bright - so I left town and went to college.

Another one that spent important years down in that area. Sure wish I had been able to see him live.

Thanks for bringing up Rainer. Can't say I never heard of him, just can't remember what it was and when and where it was. Now I know!

I left Tucson at the end of 78, I was 20, and I wasn't aware of a music scene - except I knew Paul & Linda McCartney were living here and Linda Ronstadt had grown up across the street from our home (though she left town for California in the late 60s).

Here's a pic from 2015 of Giant Sand at the Valley Bar in Phoenix.

My first exposure to Rainer was seeing a video of him on the Jools Holland show playing Life is fine. Magical performance.

I had never heard of him and was sad to see that he had already passed away. Quite tragic really.
