In Spring 1992, local band Metallica released the power ballad, "Nothing Else Matters."

In summer 1992, my friends, then in college, came home to San Francisco. One of the major hits at the time was Billy Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart." Whether in our homes, on the Bay, or anywhere else in the City, when we had up to 5 friends, we'd sing "Nothing Else Matters."

In November 1992, Miley Cyrus was born. If you weren't paying attention, you'd miss out on her wide range of cover songs. Earlier this summer, Miley went into the studio, to record "Nothing Else Matters," which appears on the Metallica tribute album, The Metallica Blacklist.

Recently, Metallica and Miley Cyrus appeared together on the Howard Stern Show, and performed "Nothing Else Matters."

Granted, I've never cared for her voice, but that was particularly awful!!!

So you know how I love those 12" singles. I have Nothing Else Matters and The Unforgiven as 12" singles which sound phenomenal. Friend of mine liked them enough to want copies for himself and was saddened to find out just how expensive they have gotten - if you can find one. Not the $20 or so I may have paid back in the day. Damn...$20+ for a song! Oh well, they are worth it!

Once again, thank you very much, for sending me that 12" single of Metallica's "The Unforgiven." It's always fun to see if a person likes that or "Nothing Else Matters" more.

When writing "Nothing Else Matters," James Hetfield wanted to write a love song, without using the word "love." And remember the context: most of the band, in the early-90s, had gone through divorces. What's a little different is that, on this song, Hetfield does not resort to histrionics. Instead, he takes a more heartfelt approach.

Think you have "Nothing Else Matters" mixed up with..............."Blue Monday". My friend likes to rib me on occasion about sending that to California instead of giving it to him. He gets to hear my copy so he's not hurting :-) If you have a NEM 12" though, you've got a valuable record!

I recall the disappointment some Metallica fans expressed about the ballads on the Black album but I was impressed to hear just how great a singer Hetfield was. They already gave us four albums of heavy speed metal so I was pleased to see them do something a little different. Sadly, that album is where the Metallica road ends for me (save for the killer Sabbath and Seeger covers on Garage Inc.)

Kindly, thoughtfully, and generously, you sent vinyl from INXS, Iron Maiden, Metallica, New Order, Slayer, and Yello. Everyone should hear INXS' "Kiss The Dirt (Falling Down The Mountain)."
