In the mid-90s, San Francisco had several audio stores. Because they were located in Union Square, and catered to entry-level high-end audio, Ultimate Sound garnered the most foot traffic. They had a lot of repeat customers. So much so, that you started to recognize a few. You would exchange phone numbers, emails, and addresses, and perhaps meet up, outside of work.

Ultimate Sound did have a few receivers. Having a radio not only provided music, it helped to burn-in demo products. Back then, most customers were in their 30s and 40s. One average-looking guy remarked, "Man, every time I come here, this is on!"

He was referring to Donna Lewis' "I Love You Always Forever," which was ubiquitous on KOIT and K101.

When you inquired, many customers said they lived in S.F. But quite a few came from across the Bay, and just to the south of S.F., including Daly City, San Bruno, and South San Francisco. Heck, my then-girlfriend ACS lived in San Bruno. Anyway, we need to go back to Ocean Beach, and see if the sand has been swept out to sea. We could have sworn that, in the 80s and 90s, the beach extended further into the ocean.

You and 2 or 3 of your girlfriends would get into subcompact cars, and go around other parts of the Bay Area. In those cars, you and the other passengers were seated very close to each other. That was very conducive, to the four of you singing along to "I Love You Always Forever."

Your girlfriends might drop you off at an audiophile's house, or even hang out for a while. We wish we had a Honda Fit, back in the mid-90s. The Fit holds four passengers, but has better cargo space and seat options, versus our mid-90s cars. See, in the mid-90s, when you visited an audiophile, you only brought small items, such as cables. If we had had a Fit, we could have squeezed audio components, or perhaps even a small floorstanding loudspeaker, or minimonitors with stands.

Donna Lewis' "I Love You Always Forever" is yet another song, which peaked at #2. And what kept it from attaining the #1 spot? "Macarena!"
