30 years ago, I could take the scenic Highway 1, between UC Santa Cruz, and my hometown of San Francisco. By Memorial Day 1991, those on the semester were already done with school. Those of us on the quarter system still had 3 or 4 more weeks to go.

That was when Elvis Costello's "The Other Side Of Summer" started to become more well-known.

While the idea of summer could be idyllic and nostalgic, "The Other Side Of Summer" was the alternate, perhaps more realistic, disappointing, and biting view of summer.

Indeed, when I returned to UCSC after the Memorial Day weekend, my dormmates seemed to feel that "the end" was near. See, summer meant that we were about to disburse. "The Other Side Of Summer" served as a warning, that summer could be a negative. So while school was still in session, if you didn't have someone, now was perhaps your last chance to do something about it.
