35 years ago, the Bay Area actually received a lot of rain. That tricked us high school freshmen, into thinking that it'd always be like that. Nope, we wouldn't get another rainy season, until more than 6 years later, in Fall 1992.

During a January or February 1986 Friday which did not have rain, some friends decided to stick around after school, and play football. One friend/classmate who subsequently did not play sports with us was Peggy. When she showed up that afternoon, she said, in a flat and neutral tone, "Ow, my leg."

So she manned the boombox, while everyone else played football. And that was when I first heard Talk Talk's "Life's What You Make It."

For months, Peggy's right leg bothered her. And of course, everyone called her "Peg Leg." They couldn't figure out what was wrong, and Peggy hobbled and complained about pain and funky motion. Finally, when the 1987/88 school year started, Peggy had what was then called "arthroscopic surgery" on her knee. During Spirit Week, she was on crutches.

But anyway, Talk Talk's "Life's What You Make It" reminds me of Peggy, and her travails with her leg. This is a song, which didn't really get much attention or airplay, when it came out in 1986. For popular music, it was a little off-kilter. That sophistication lent itself to audiophiles, who liked unearthing such out-of-the-mainstream material. In the mid-90s, my then-girlfriend ACS and I would visit audiophiles. One guy in the Oakland hills played "Life's What You Make It" on a CAL Delta/Alpha combo. You just don't forget such moments.
