Since the late-70s, we've known that our parents met and/or conceived us, while listening to Led Zeppelin. No matter, even after LZ broke up, upon the death of John Bonham, our generation latched on to their music. In the early-90s, when we (a) were in college, and (b) became sexually active, LZ took on greater importance. Moreover, Jimmy Page began remastering the LZ catalog, which became available and plentiful on CD. When we enjoyed LZ, one of my wannabe hippie dormmates shouted, "We're becoming just like our parents!" Off of Led Zeppelin III, the cover of "Gallows Pole" sees LZ using banjo. The song is about a person about to be hung, but leaves us to wonder, if he or she is spared. In the dorms, three Polish-American girls were in a triple room. Thus they often referred to themselves as "the Pole girls." I scanned this photo as best I could, and we can see their whiteboard. And of course, they liked to play "Gallows Pole." One of our dorm neighbors [I spy her UC Santa Cruz lanyard, which held her physical keys. Back then, electronic locks/keys did not not exist], who was not ethnically Polish, got dressed up, and jokingly said, "I'm the fourth Pole girl, err, Pole Dancer," LOL! Having gotten comfortable with "Gallows Pole," LZ would then write "Battle Of Evermore," which appeared on their next album. -Lummy The Loch Monster |
