"I hate you," emailed one Inmate. "I was all set in my ways, and then you come up with an earworm I can't get out of my head."

I had passed along Avril Lavigne's "What The Hell," which is now 10 years-old.

Working on a college campus can keep you young, and also expose you to what the students are listening to. Such was the case ten years ago, when I was working at Stanford University. The campus is nestled between El Camino Real and 280, and is flat. But even with bicyclists, the campus never feels overcrowded. Buildings are evenly spread out, and even the Main Quad (above, kitty corner from the clock tower) is empty.

A coed asked, "Hey, weren't you in my poli-sci class last year?"

But you looked around, and no one else was present. What the hell? So the coed was actually asking you. You just threw up a shrug, "I just work here."

I was walking through Stern and Wilbur, and that's when I heard Avril Lavigne's "What The Hell" for the first time. And on your long commute home, you couldn't get it out of your head.

When your wife finds out about coeds thinking you were their recent/current classmate, your wife goes, "What the hell?!"
