Growing up in San Francisco in the 70s and 80s, we dreamed of sea monsters rising from Ocean Beach and the Bay. Alas, adults told us that the only thing to look out for were Soviet subs. Boo. Nevertheless, a certain segment of audiophiles keeps requesting tales about and photos of the California coast.

In summer 1989, the Scorpions performed at the Moscow Music Festival, which inspired them to write "Wind Of Change." It was included on 1990's Crazy World, when the Baltics had started to break away from the Soviet Union. The Scorpions took advantage of the USSR falling apart, And released "Wind Of Change," which, over time, became a massive hit.

In the early-90s, many of us stayed on the California coast, for college. "Wind Of Change" caused us to become more sympathetic to peoples of the former USSR. And if any Russian subs appeared off the California coast, they either needed rescue, or were trying to defect. My friends took a renewed interest in, and care for, the coast. For her UCSB art class, my friend, while listening to "Wind Of Change," painted this of the Santa Barbara coast.
