30 years ago, Santa Cruz could be warm during the day. But with the shorter days, once the sun started to go over the ocean, the temps dropped. So if you were caught out there in shorts and t-shirt, the <60-degree temps felt nippy.

By the time the dining halls opened at 5p for dinner, it was already pretty dark. After eating with a friend or multiple friends, maybe you had night classes or sections. Maybe you continued hanging out with others. Maybe you went over to someone else's room. Even though it wasn't late, the outdoor cold lowered your enthusiasm, of going back to your own dorm.

See, students did not need to be sexiled, in order to sleep in others' rooms. With the late-night cross-campus trek too daunting, I stayed with friends. It just felt more comfy, huddled up under warm and cozy blankets. And of course, we'd talk about music. It was here, that one of my friends remarked that Warrant should have come out with "Uncle Tom's Cabin," instead of "Cherry Pie." She stated that "Uncle Tom's Cabin" would have established some much-needed credibility for the band.

Instead, Warrant got relegated to hair metal status, and when alt-rock and grunge came along shortly thereafter, Warrant were left behind, never to recover.

We can't fix history, but "Uncle Tom's Cabin" is still in our rotation.
