One of my audiophile friends likes to say, "I never had anyone nearby, so how could I have anyone far away?"

In the pre-internet days 30 years ago, if you were in a LDR, you could use snail mail. Or, if you could afford them, you could make long-distance phone calls.

Carla and I were both in the same UC Santa Cruz dorm complex. Her boyfriend was in L.A., while my girlfriend was in S.F. Not having your SO in the beautiful Santa Cruz was a major downer. Carla and I not only commiserated in the dorms, we actually went off campus, and moaned.

Don Dokken's "Stay" was a plea, not to break up. Carla and I could not resist the allure of the coast. The bitingly cold waters snapped her into focus, and she reiterated to me, that she really liked her boyfriend. She was resolute, about making it work. But she admitted and sighed that she was one side of the equation. Her boyfriend was the other. He did indeed like Carla, but it was just so much easier and constructive, to have a local girlfriend.

In early 1991, I would break up with my girlfriend. Later in the Spring 1991 quarter, Carla pretty much knew that it was over, between herself and the L.A. boyfriend.

My wife actually prefers "Stay" over Dokken the band's earlier slower songs, such as "Alone Again" and "Walk Away."
