30 years ago, Don Dokken came out with a solo album, Up From The Ashes. Here, he recruited Billy White (guitar, Watchtower), John Norum (guitar, Europe), Mikkey Dee (drums, King Diamond), and Peter Baltes (bass, Accept). It included an obscure ballad, "When Love Finds A Fool," co-written with Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, Black Sabbath). Later in the Fall 1990 quarter/semester, I was home in San Francisco. Several stray friends, who didn't really know each other, went out. Jana, who was the only one halfway-decent in pool, put Don Dokken's Up From The Ashes into the PA system. She watched us beginners flub, and take weird angles, with questionable ricochets. Jana giggled, "It's not hockey!" I'm not saying there was cause and effect, but after "When Love Finds A Fool" played, and set the mood, Steve found Jana attractive. And, sure enough, they hooked up. -Lummy The Loch Monster |
