30 years ago, TAS did not have a regular schedule. You never knew if an issue would be released in one or two months. Moreover, even when an edition came out, I would not actually receive that issue for weeks. Thus, 30 years ago, when I moved back to UC Santa Cruz, I had the July/August (not September/October) 1990 issue.

When I moved into my dorm, you were curious about who your neighbors were. In the triple room next to me were three girls: Lumberjack Girl, the tall, crude, reddish-brown haired hack; Haley, the good-looking straight-haired blonde; and Andrea, the petite curly blonde, who, the prior year, was also my neighbor.

So what was one of the first things we did? Andrea and I made the short walk to the campus radio station, KZSC. We knew that, as the school year started, KZSC would sell off the CDs they wouldn't play. Since they really only played World Beat and folk-based college rock, you had your choice of any other genre.

I spotted a generic-looking CD from Prefab Sprout, Jordan: The Comeback. Because it sported such a variety of music, KZSC didn't know what to do with it, and put it up for sale. I bought it, and it turned out to be not just one of the best of 1990, but best of all-time. But it took repeated listening, to get into it.

In the near future, I will cover some of its songs, but for now, hear the pretty straight-forward title track. I do not recall what happened to the actual CD I bought from KZSC. In the 90s and 2000s, I would use it as an audiophile reference. And then, when this album came out on BSCD2 (pictured at the top), I lost track of my KZSC CD.

Note that the original recording, with Thomas Dolby producing, is excellent. He gives this album a high-quality, detailed, sharp, clear, and clean sound. You wish that ALL of popular music would sound this good. The BSCD2 goes a step further, by having images which are more realistically anchored and 3D. Also, there's a touch less grain and hardness.

At the end of that school year, in June 1991, Michael Jordan would win his first NBA title, beating the Los Angeles Lakers in five games.
