25 years ago, my then-girlfriend ACS and I were at San Francisco's Ultimate Sound. Maybe we were hemming and hawing between Kimber KCAG and XLO Signature interconnects. But we had our usual power rock instrumentals from Joe Satriani and Stuart Hamm.

Another customer, perhaps in his mid-40s, was wearing a polo shirt. He then opened his attache case, and pulled out a CD from pianist, David Benoit, Shaken Not Stirred. This CD clearly was recorded well. The fastest songs were the title track and "I Went To Bat For You." But for ACS, who liked adult contemporary music, one track, "Any Other Time," stood out. It featured former Ambrosia singer, David Pack.

In those days, MTV and VH1 had stopped playing music videos, in lieu of reality shows. Even if these channels played music videos, they probably would not have played David Benoit. Thus, no video was filmed for "Any Other Time," and the song was sentenced to obscurity.

But the thing was, in those days, when shopping for audio, you physically went to a store. And when you did, the possibility existed, to exchange music with other customers. With online shopping and SIP, we've lost the human contact and interaction. Oh well, go online, and check out David Benoit's "Any Other Time," which, for me and ACS, extended the life and impact of Ambrosia.

The first surprise was something by Frank Gambale. Now one from David Benoit (wonders never cease). I've been a card carrying fan of David Benoit since 1990. I've seen him several times in concert and he never fails to impress. His recordings with vocals tend to be rare so hearing this one was nice. Thanks for posting.

By 1987, we had learned about solo guitarists, like Chris Impelliteri, Joe Satriani, Tony MacAlpine, Vinnie Moore, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Frank Gambale was relatively well-known because he (a) was a teacher, and (b) joined the Chick Corea Elektric Band.

Perhaps because he was on major label GRP Records, David Benoit became known to me and my classmates in 1988, especially with "The Key To You," featuring Ambrosia's David Pack on vocals. In the early-80s, Ambrosia were popular, here in San Francisco.

As for "Any Other Time" and Shaken Not Stirred, I did not learn about them, until that mid-1995 visit to Ultimate Sound. Again, audiophiles sharing music is of utmost importance.
