Audiophiles can be very astute. Occasionally, I talk about my second home (and where the vast majority of my relatives still resides), Hawaii. Audiophiles pick up on that, and request more descriptions and photographs. If it's expensive for audiophiles to visit the Bay Area, it's even more expensive to go to Hawaii. And of course, audiophiles want to know about contemporary Hawaiian music, which is incorporated into American pop/rock. In the 1990s, Dancing Cat Records were headquartered in Santa Cruz, CA. Their products were distributed by Windham Hill. Credit must be given to Dancing Cat/Windham Hill, for bringing quality recordings of Hawaiian music to the mainstream.  Most of the daytime photos are in the blazing Hawaiian sun and heat. But if you go during the winter, Honolulu can be overcast, with rain. Different. But don't let that fool you; highs are still in the (low) 80s. Keola Beamer's Kolonahe is now 20-years-old. He leads off with another version of the traditional "Ku'u Lei Awapuhi." Different. According to the liner notes, "This is the first time anyone has played a song in the key of Bb in this F tuning."  The 2014 reissue sports even better (images are more 3D) sound quality. Do not miss "Blue Water Dolphin," "He Aloha Mele," and a re-working of "Honolulu City Lights." After listening to Beamer's Kolonahe, you wish American pop/rock would make use of beautiful slack key guitar. -Lummy The Loch Monster
