In early 1995, we bowled in in-house leagues at San Francisco's Japantown Bowl. We also liked to practice at nearby Classic, King, Park (which would turn into Amoeba Records), and Sea Bowls. Many of us also did (a) "travel league," which rotated among various Central California alleys, and (b) tournaments. These weren't just about the bowling, they were about the excursions themselves.  Urban dance, rock, synthpop, and hip hop were our status quo. But as soon as we got away from the coast, radio stations played country and Latin music. On March 31, 1995, Selena (Quintanilla-Perez) was killed by her former manager. Until her death, most audiophiles did not know about Selena. The adult contemporary ballad, "I Could Fall In Love" was released posthumously, in summer of 1995.  Since most of us were in our teens and 20s, these bowling trips doubled as mini-vacations. At Santa Cruz's Surf Bowl (it's now called Boardwalk Bowl), we'd obviously hop on over to the beach. The wafting "I Could Fall In Love" made us forget about bowling.  In Reno, we'd get away from the alley, and go into Lake Tahoe, or the nearby rivers. "I Could Fall In Love" got you to ease into the water. Bad idea. Those waters are from snowmelt, and are cold! It's less painful, if you just dive in.  And of course, in SoCal and Vegas, we loved lying out poolside, and listening to "I Could Fall In Love." Whether or not you found a boyfriend/girlfriend on the bowling trip, when you returned to the Bay Area, radio stations kept playing "I Could Fall In Love." High-end audio was peaking, life was good. Hard to believe that that was 25 years ago, we are twice as old as we were back then, and we have teenagers of our own. -Lummy The Loch Monster
