 Though Tesla's Mechanical Resonance came out during the Fall '86 semester, perhaps because the band was from Sacramento (versus LA or SF), it didn't become widespread until the middle of 1987. By coming from the blues-based rock, Tesla were an integral part of heavy metal's 1987 rebirth and expansion. Their "Modern Day Cowboy" was much better and more genuine than Bon Jovi's "Wanted Dead Or Alive." Of course, for us audiophiles, Tesla had immediate appeal. Not only were they named after, and promoted, Nikola Tesla, but they often used tube amps. All right, all right, I'll admit it. During the Spring '87 semester, I went on a college tour, which included UC Davis. Because Tesla hailed from nearby Sactown, I entertained the thought of one day being an Aggie. However, the 100-degree heat was a major deterrent, which would, two years later, make me lean towards other schools. Still, on the way back, we had the bus driver play Mechanical Resonance, and I recall, as we got to Vacaville, we were rockin' to "Modern Day Cowboy." -Lummy The Loch Monster
