During the Spring 1981 semester, 4th grade, whenever no one was home after school, I went to my upstairs neighbor, and African American family. I never had anything to complaint about, because (a) they didn't make me do my homework, but (b) they played THE BEST music, stuff my family didn't know about, stuff I could never find on my own. They had a granddaughter, who was about my age. I'd go to her room, where she'd turn on the radio, or play records. On a fine, fog-free afternoon, she introduced me to Stanley Clarke and George Duke's* "Sweet Baby." Sweet. One of my PAL baseball coaches, who looked like a cross between Lionel Richie and George Foreman (of the 70s), would bring a boombox. At practice in Golden Gate Park, said boombox, probably tuned to the lite rock station, KOIT, played "Sweet Baby." Sweet. In '81, the Oakland Raiders were the Super Bowl champs. And back then, my grandmother was still alive, living in Oakland's Fruitvale neighborhood. I recall her neighbors sitting on their own front stairs. With "Sweet Baby" playing, I stopped dead in my tracks, wanting to absorb every moment. Sweet. That academic year, I was at a new school, located in San Francisco's Marina District. A 5th grader, who looked like Good Times' Jimmie Walker, led us at lunch time, in singing "Sweet Baby." Sweet. After work today, I was jogging at a different marina, San Leandro's. A clan was having a picnic/BBQ. I suppose an iPhone was hooked up to some speakers. I overheard "Sweet Baby," and wanted to crash the party! Sweet.
