I saw Roon is offering a 3 month trial for $1 Today if you're interested. This is just a PSA.... I have tried Roon and it is not for me... Nothing wrong with it.... It is just not the way I prefer to search for Music.

3 Months for a Buck

...how hard it is to cancel at the end of the period? That always seems to be the wild card when taking advantage of attractive intro pricing.

That said, I have no idea whether Room is on the tough end of things when it comes to cancellation or the easy side.

Easy. Though I'm not a fan of "credit card first and we'll start billing after your trial", it was easy to cancel. I wasn't ready to continue until the rest of my system is up and running, so I cancelled at the end. Just clicked on the account and cancelled. I really liked it and will be reupping to a monthly account again soon. NEVER would I pay for yearly, or "lifetime" in this day and age. I also tried Audirvana, which didn't require a CC for the month long free trial. Once I started using Roon though I never touched Audirvana again.

I paid monthly for about a year when Roon first came out wondering if Roon would still be around in a year or so. I finally paid for the "lifetime" use license [before they jacked up the price]. At this point I got my money's worth.

Roon mentioned a while ago that the "lifetime" business model isn't sustainable so they are pushing subscription based pricing which has been the trend for the software industry for a few years now.

It's not for everyone but I like Roon quite a bit.

Website says they still offer a "lifetime" option for $699. I'll take monthly. Might snag the 3 months for a $1 though in the meantime and consider annually. I really liked it too, just that my SB Touch does everything I needed for now, not as smoothly, but functionally. It's giving me fits again with frequent rebooting though, so alternatives are calling.

Audirvana just seemed more complex than I needed. Roon integrated local music, Qobuz (search in Qobuz needs work) and Spotify pretty seamlessly and I just didn't need all the audio controls and switches that Audirvana had.

Good to know they are easy to deal with.

I haven't played with Audirvana lately but I think inmate Ivan303 has it figured out.

Audirvana Studio with release 1.85 and latest iOS Remote is now useable for guys like me streaming to a Sonore Signature Rendu SE Optical.

Given that the user interface is a joke compared to Roon, the only reason to screw around with this software is the sound.

Roon doesn't sound bad, but Studio is superior sounding in my setup. The sonic difference between the 2 players is very obvious and easily discernible to this listener.

Well, I just took advantage of the ROON 3 month for $1 trial option (who knew having multiple email accounts would come in handy!). When my new amp gets here and I can have a proper setup where I might hear a difference I can give Audirvana a go. I do like the simple interface of ROON and that is important to me. I'm not a fiddler, more PnP listener though so, M(y)MMV.

I took them up on it. As I said below, who knew having multiple email accounts would come in so handy. I tried free Qobuz 3 times before finally subscribing.

I have a Roon Nucleus + that has been totally trouble free the last 3 years.

I guess I appreciate what Roon presents and can live with the sonics. It's just more fun to use!

Can you describe the SQ differences? I'm curious to know what comes across as most obvious.

Since I haven't played with Audirvana in quite a while or AV Studio at all, I can't make a SQ comparison with ROON. ROON has been 100% reliable for several years on my Mac Mini and the Synology NAS.

I'd be curious to know if you are running ROON in it's most basic sonic mode w/o any DSP enabled? Similarly, is AV Studio set to its most basic audio mode?

And then I be curious to know if DSP adjustments in ROON will bring it up to AV Studio SQ.

Just some thoughts.

When using Roon or Studio with the Playback Designs MPD-8, I thought things sounded better to me upsampling PCM to DSD256. Studio straight still sounds better regardless of upsampling Roon.

I recently installed the new Ayre USB2 board in my QX-5 Twenty. Both Roon and AS sound better played straight with no upsampling.

Roon sounds brighter and has a smaller soundstage. The bass is fuller and less defined with Roon. Roon seems a bit compressed sounding compared to Studio with my toys.

Interesting. Thanks for providing the details of what you're hearing. I'm not sure if my old Audirvana Plus license is valid for AV Studio. I'll have to give it a try if the license still works.
