I been using the D90 for many months in my office and have been hankering to upgrade my main system in the family room. After Abe's review of the RME, I decided to give it a whirl.

Equipment used is as follows:

RME ADI-2 DAC: RPi4 via usb connection

Topping D90: Squeezebox Touch via optical

Both units were connected to my BAT VK5i preamp via balanced cables feeding my McIntosh MC30s and Altec Model 19 speakers. Both DACs had the volume levels matched as best I could so switching from one to the other was seemless and instantaneous. All settings were the default other than the Loudness on the RME which is very subtle.

The RME was trickery to get set up. Many options require using the remote and I had to figure out how to configure it for the RPi4. I found this trick using ssh to login to the RPi4:

$ aplay -L

hw:CARD=DAC56680474,DEV=0

Changing the Squeezelite setting, change the Audio output setting to USB and the Output setting to hw:CARD=DACXXXXXXXX,DEV=0 where the Xs are the serial number of the RME.

Ok, so how do they sound? In a word, fantastic! Doing fast switching, neither my wife or I could reliably tell the difference. After a while, we found a cut from Pat Green with spooky imaging and played the first 10-15 seconds of the cut over and over from one to the other. My wife thought that the D90 was wider, slightly fuller. My thought was that she was right, but I felt the RME presented a slightly more delicate image versus one that is a bit bigger and rounder.

After several days, our impressions didn't really change. So, I swapped the RPi4/USB to the D90 with the RME getting an optical feed. Again, fast switching gave us no difference. If anything the wider effect on the D90 largely went away. The two DACs sounded even more the same than different. If anything, I suspect that the USB interface is a bit more precise versus the optical output from the Squeezebox Touch.

I'll be moving the D90 up to the main system as it uses a Squeezebox Touch for a steamer. I prefer it there as it works and anyone can control the music from it without needing my phone app. The RME will stay in my office.

The next question is which do I prefer. That's a toss up. My favorite feature is the ability to turn the lights off the RME. The D90 has a dim mode, but doesn't turn off all together. Changing the volume on the RME is easy and obvious with a big knob. However, I haven't figured out how to change inputs on the RME without the remote, Topping wins in that regard as the select button on the face plate goes through the input options.

Another difference is that the Topping is fairly warm, even a touch hot where the power transformer is located. The RME uses an external box for power and a plug unlike a typical wall wart as it is threaded and locks in place. This difference makes the RME run much cooler.

If you're a tweaker, the RME will please you with its equalization, saved settings and various filter options. OTOH, the manual is on the cryptic side. It's also far more sophisticated than the D90.

Considering the lower cost, the Topping D90 is a very good DAC for the current $900 price. For an extra $300, the RME offers auto shut off light on the screen which comes back on if you change anything and then goes out. And you get a bunch of cool stuff that I suspect that I'll never use.

My choice is the RME by a small margin.

I agree. I like the RME by a small margin, but the margin widens in my case if running each DAC direct to the amp w/o a preamp. The RME seems to be more robust vs the D90 in that configuration with the D90 sounding a little leaner. Both are great sounding DACs that don't break the bank.

Your comparisons of DACs mirror most of mine also. Most DACs are very close.

That explains a lot for me. I had no idea that you were not using a Pre-amp in your system. I have tried a couple DACs directly into my Amps in my system on several occasions. I never liked what I heard at all. They were all 'thin' sounding compared to using my Tube Pre-Amp. In fact I would characterize the sound as 'Not Alive'.... Very Lean.

Maybe the difference between the RME and your other DACs had to do with a separate Power Supply as Rod was describing? --- In my case, I believe my Gustard X26 Pro has the leg up on my D90, because of it's Robust Dual Power Supply... One of the few DACs I've compared where I could discern a 'Night and Day' Difference against the D90.

I like the RME and D90 into my preamp, but the RME has a sight leg up w/o the preamp. It gains a tad bit more transparency (due to no inline preamp) but unlike the D90, the RME doesn't lose dynamics.

I can't say that the difference is due mainly to the outboard RME power supply because it's nothing more than a switcher about the size of a deck of cards, or something you might see charging a small laptop.

I'll be trying an outboard 12 VDC linear power supply soon. The RME accepts 9 - 15 VDC

"Most DACs are very close."

Allow me to make a minor revision to your comment above. I like to say that "Most good DACs are very close."

There are many outliers that sound not so great but they still get great reviews whether from the professional audiophile press or reviewer wannabe's on YouTube. I don't claim to be a reviewer but I like to post my findings here. And none of my DACs are reviewer accommodation loaners with the option to buy at huge discount so I have no need to be 'polite' about what I say.

You got my audio nervousa going with that Gustard X26pro comment, it's tempting and just another $300. Dual mono peaks my interest.

Wow. Great review.

Basically Auto-Shut-Off-Lights makes the RME a winner for you.

I mean. The DACs sound the same in your only valid setup (RPI/USB).

RME settings seem to be complex and mostly useless. OK. Nothing to
worry about.

And for all that you're willing to pay $300+. Nope. Actually $1200.

To me it seems that you just wasted $1200.

Anyhow.

Q1: Don't the rest of the family have "a phone app" to control the RPI?
Q2: Can you describe your RPI setup HW and SW incl. peripherals. All this
can make a hell of a difference - soundwise.

My previous DAC auditions were similar to what you described comparing the RME to the D90... Switching back and forth, trying to discern a difference. I had these experiences over the last 10 years with DACs costing upwards to $3500... The differences were small, if any at all. The X26 Pro Audition was different. I will say that I ONLY Audition DACs through my Tube Pre-Amp... I don't care for the DAC directly to my Amps Sound. Too Lean and 'Lifeless'.

I was fortunate to compare the X26 Pro in my system, before I ordered one. I had helped a guy in town here set up his Streaming Audio System, and noticed he had a X26 Pro in his system. I had asked him if he could bring over his DAC to compare to the Topping D90. I had seen the reviews of the X26 Pro and was interested in hearing it. This particular review piqued my interest:

Gustard X26 Pro Review

When my friend brought over the X26, the differences were immediate and apparent to the both of us. I ordered one immediately. When I received the X26 Pro, I had another audiophile buddy come over and we compared the D90 to the X26 Pro. He also ordered one the next day.

I surely can't find any setting to auto shut off after 30s. Can you tell me how to do it?

Rod, It's on the remote control.... The 'auto' button on the bottom left will toggle the Auto feature to 'on' and 'off'.

I've toggled that option on the remote many times....Auto: On...Auto: Off, neither setting does a thing.

Rod, Toggle it to 'ON'.. You do see it toggling in the Screen of the DAC, right? ..

If you Turn off whatever is feeding it... Raspberry Pi in my Case, the DAC will turn Black and go into standby mode. In fact I can have the Power to my Raspberry Pi on, but turn the power off in the PiCorePlay Screen and the DAC will go into Standby Mode in 30 seconds.

So, that's the 'Key'... If you have a device feeding the DAC that is 'live', the DAC will not go into sleep mode.

I turn off the RPi4, but it still shows a connection to the D90. The on;y way I could get the D90 to turn off is to change the input from USB to something not connected to the D90.

I've turned off the RPi4 both using the LMS web control and via Orange Squeeze, neither work.

I only tested it with Coax ...... So it may not work with USB ........nt, posted on November 4, 2021 at 12:45:00

It sounds like I have a similar setup to yours in a system, an RPi4 feeding a D90 via USB. The auto on/off does work. [Select Auto On, save and exit, then turn the D90 power off/on at the rear switch.] My D90 turns on and off as I power the RPi4 on and off...you need to actually power the Pi off, otherwise there seems to be some signal, as indicated by a displayed frequency rather than the --- when there's truly no signal.

I got my D90 just over a year ago, perhaps we have some firmware difference?
