Can a Play Station 3 be used to rip SACDs?

Only early PS3 models had SACD playback and can be used to rip SACDs. The "thin" models cannot, and the last of the "fat" models can't either. Also, it's a bit of an ordeal if you're not a computer geek.

It's much easier to pick up one of the Blu-Ray players that can rip SACDs thanks to a hack on a specific MediaTek system chipset. My Oppo 103 can. See below.

If you google it there is a chart detailing the 3 models of PS3 that can rip. You have to take the OS back to an early release. A few years back I found a suitable old model on ebay and then did some quite tortuous software stuff to take the os back. It worked and I use it to rip SACDs.

As the other responder said it is much easier to do it on a blu ray player. You just create a memory stick with software on then start up the player with this stick in the machine. it then rips and you record the resulting file on a PC on the same network as the blu ray player.

If you google the topic there is a list of usable players.

See the other response and some Blu-Ray players can as well - https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/28569-sacd-ripping-using-an-oppo-or-pioneer-yes-its-true/page/110/?tab=comments#comment-779908

or https://www.quadraphonicquad.com/forums/threads/sony-blu-ray-players-used-for-sacd-ripping.26078/

and this has some info too (not sure if there is an updated version)

Some PS3s can indeed be used to rip SACDs. However you need to know not only the model of PS3 but also the manufacturing batch that it came from as the ability to allow a digital output from SACDs for these PS3s was not intentional on Sony's part and contravened agreements with the music industry. So they were effectively made in error, some containing the chip that allows it, others not . There was (and maybe still is) a table of suitable units to be found online.

The second issue is that the use of these machines for this purpose now dates back several years. You may Google "How to" online manuals which contain links to the necessary software. However when I tried this route a couple of years ago I found that in every case the links were dead. I suspect someone's lawyers(Sony's?) had been busy in getting the executable files taken down.

A further issue arises as some of the PS3s need to be updated to a later OS and then be hacked (a "Jail Break") so that the PS3 would accept a download of the ripping software from an unofficial online source i.e. not Sony which it would otherwise be tied to. There was a video on You Tube with instructions on how to do this and which provided the URL of the resource that has the code for the hack. The last time I viewed this was at least two years ago and I no longer have its URL. It may no longer be available anyway as You Tube is now much tighter in its control of what is being posted.

In the end I found the whole thing was now too complex and abandoned the attempt though I am sure that earlier adopters had an easier time of it.

Other newer SACD ripping hacks exist for certain Pioneer players and, more recently, for some comparatively inexpensive Sony multi-purpose DVD/Blu Ray players. If I was to try again then I would attempt the latter route.

I saw a PS3 on the Santa Barbara Craigslist and that brought to mind ripping SACDs. Buy given I have two Blu-ray players already racked up, an Ayre DX-5 DSD and Oppo 205, that's probably the way to go should I decide to rip SACDs. I ripped the CDs of interest using dbPoweramp and downloaded a few special high-res files from Acoustic Sounds, but mostly the offerings from Qobuz and Tidal have satisfied my needs -- 192/24 FLAC of Kind of Blue and 44/24 of Gould's 1981 Goldberg Variations sound splendid to me.

I am afraid not. The fact that a player will play SACDs does not men that it will necessarily allow the ripping of them. It has to allow a digital output of the decoded SACD ( SACDs are encrypted and require decoding to DSD). This was in contravention of the SACD licence which only authorised an output after the stream had been converted to analogue. Most players conform with the licence provisions though I am unsure in respect of more recent players whether or not the patents have expired.

The Ayre is ( AFIK) compliant with the licence and cannot be used for ripping. There are, however, Oppo players that will allow this but not from the 20x range. You need a 10x model.

Yes, the Qobuz hi-res streams can sound great.

Just got this going successfully. Much easier and cheaper to achieve than with a Playstation.
The link below gives the method

PAR, I looked at the stack of boxes of equipment I hope someday to sell and I saw Oppo models 93, 105, and 105D in addition to the 205 I have in a rack. But in reality, given I haven't bothered to sell the stuff in the pile of boxes, 5 Parasound amps. preamp, and phonostage, Cary A/V processors, and an Ayre preamp, it's unlikely that I'll actually rip SACDs. Nearly all my listening is to streamed from Qobuz and Tidal. My Thorens TD 124 with its handsome SME III arm has become an iconic decoration. I do enjoy the KEF Reference 1s with the Ayre Twenty gear.

I would rather use a Sony or Pioneer bluray player to do that. 2 reasons - easy to find on the eBay and also much cheaper. I have ripped 140 SACDs to DFF files using the Sony BX59 (Costco version of S590).

The 105 and 105D (and the 103 models) are the easiest to use for ripping SACDs. In fact, my 105 is ripping a new SACD as I am typing.
