Remember the endless arguments about computer audio?

Streaming and renderers fixed everything, so it seems.

OK, not much whining about the price of JRiver updates of late, but other than that, not much has changed.

Pis and 'hats' now days.

Don't forget USB vs. AES3 vs. I2S.

Antagonists of yesteryear have been replace with new offenders.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

In the end all these arguments we had over the years - bringing up and discussing the weak spots of computer a based audio - led us to where we are today.

Computer based audio - altogether - became ( more a less ) a commodity.

Meaning. No matter how much you invest, $100 or $3000, you can end up with an excellent audio solution.

Beside that, the generation which's been pushing the whole thing is a dying breed. They're running out of steam slowly but surely.

There's no new generation ( I see ) filling that exact void. (That's how it usually goes)

Todays generation IMO wants a phone, a bluetooth speaker/headset and a streaming provider. A traditional stereo is considered as something from the dark ages. IMO - Fair enough!

I do enjoy very much what has been achieved. And I'll do it for a couple of more years to come. ;)

Enjoy.

the only thing that has changed is that people no longer seem to be worried as much about soundquality here. If it plays that seems to be good enough. If it measures well then it is good enough. people are listening to blutooth for goodness sake.

Also there seem to be less manufacturers here and they would often get into the arguments. Guessing they left because good enough sound is not exactly their thing.

Its the IT crowd basically that is here now and sq is not even a thing with them.

Cut to razor sounding violins

Many folks are still interested in sound quality-just not here. The manufacturers were driven off by the crazy behavior of some inmates.

Whenever it was, I was completely taken by the early Ipods, and I thought, "I want to use Itunes and play digital music through my home stereo." That was probably 2002 or 3. Think of where we were then. I wanted all of my music searchable. I started ripping CDs as WAV files, and it sounded good. Then I got a sound card with a coax out, and through a Timbre tt-1 DAC, it was quite good. I thought I had invented digital audio. Then someone point me to this forum. I was a little disappointed. I was way behind. Then sometime I had a decent DAC, a decent amp, and decent cans. There was an upside, but small increments of improved SQ got very expensive. I have a relatively modest setup down, but music can only sound so much like music. There is only so much information in those files. Now there is only hearing the music better, better ears and more attention. The interface can be improved. I wish Roon gave a lot more information. I still miss the liner notes of LPs (showing my age).

I have been away from the audio forums mostly. Amazing how many names on posts here now that I remember.

I don't know of another computer / streaming music player that provides more meta data information than Roon.

What you see on the top-level screen is just the beginning as you can poke on links and tracks to dig deeper. It's far from perfect but IMHO it's THE best we have for computer audio.

there are only about half a dozen IT guys left.

Those who are interested in SQ above control software and cheap hardware have gone elsewhere.
