Does/can the PCP/LMS/SL RPi 4B support/pass MQA signals to an MQA device for partial full MQA unfolding? I have a Meridian Explorer2. Playing MQA files via PCP, the lights on the Explorer that indicate an MQA file is playing - green or blue - never light.

I don't run MQA, however...

afaik, to get MQA properly streamed, the streaming chain needs to be bit-transparent, like streaming DSD.

You need to make sure that your data won't get converted/touched.

1. select "native" in the file formatting section for your MQA streaming format (flac ??).

2. Now comes the issue with volume control. If your audio device offers onDAC volume control - you need to enable and configure that one - in your pCP/LMS/squeezelite setup. You need to refer squeezelite to your HW volume control.
Of course only if onDAC volume control exists and it'd support MQA.

If there's no onDAC volume control you'd have to lock volume at 100%
on LMS for your squeezelite player under player settings.

Let me know if that works. It's just a wild guess. I can't test it myself.

The Pi4 can pass MQA but I'm not sure about your software. My Pi4 is running DietPi with Roon Bridge software. I run the Pi4 over USB to my PS Audio DAC. While this older DAC will not decode MQA, the first MQA "unfolding" is handled in software by Roon.

That said and for what it's worth, I'm not a big fan of MQA. I can stream MQA via Tidal and 'regular' unadulterated hi-res from Qobuz. I find no advantage in MQA.

Additionally, I owned the Meridian Explorer 2 DAC and it was fun to light up the MQA LEDs but there are much better sounding DACs out there, including some listed in your own Asylum Profile. In other words, the fact that the Explorer 2 can decode MQA doesn't necessarily make it a good sounding DAC - even while decoding MQA. But it was fun to play with mine while I had it.
