OK, I'm a Windows guy and Android Guy..... I have admired the iPhones for awhile with their great software and Hardware for Cameras, as well as the Look and Feel.... So, today I popped for the $700 !! iPhone 6S with 128GB of Storage..... (Rainy Day).

I have been setting it up and getting used to the differences, but I have run into a major roadblock for myself. Here Goes:

I like to store All of my Computer Files, Photos, Videos (Except Music) on my Android Phone. So I start looking for the equivalent way to copy all my Windows Files to this new iPhone.... Only about 60GB of Data Total.

So, I start searching and reading and it tells me to go to iTunes (WTF - I thought that was for music).... So , then I see "How to do it without itunes.... So, I download 'Documents' and that has you opening Apps like Photos... I try Copying any Pasting files from Windows to the iphone and it ignores me. When using itunes apparently it forces you to use the icloud as an intermediary for getting files back and forth from your computer to your phone.... And of course, if you exceed 5GB, you have to pay Apple for more storage. (That won't happen !! - That's what I bought the 128GB for !)

Phone will be returned in a few days unless someone can tell me how to manage my files on the iphone.... Seems like I must be missing a Big link, but using Google has me doing things that are so much more complicated than the Android "Copy and Paste" from Windows... Back and Forth... Android seems to be able to talk to Windows, but I can't find a way for the iPhone to talk to Windows in the area of File Management.

Ideally I would like to take the Folder in Windows called "My Data" -- That has Text, Photos, Videos, Spreadsheets, PDF Files etc. etc. and move it to my iPhone Storage, with a couple clicks of the mouse. This is what I do with my Android Phone. And then 'Refresh it' every few months.. I can easily access my files from my NAS, but Sometimes I am out of range of internet and Cell phone signal and like to have my files. Can it be done with Apple ??

I'm not an iPhone expert but there are apparently several apps that will do what you want. I don't have a need for ALL of my files to be on my iPhone but I have access to several via iCloud drive. Yes, it costs me a whopping 0.99 per month for 50GB and any file that I have on my Mac can be accessed / shared via my iPhone or iPad w/o actually consuming space on the device.... it's in the cloud after all.

Here's one potential solution I found. Be sure to read the comments on the YouTube page as other solutions are mentioned.

I will study the links that you have given me. I really want the iPhone to work for me, but I cannot tolerate taking a step backward.

The problem with the Cloud and my NAS is that you have to have access to Internet and/or Cell Phone Signal.... Which I may not (A lot of the time).

I have my access to my NAS, when I have access to internet or Cell phone signal, and then access to my Files are completely Free.

$700 iPhone is something it takes awhile to get used to.

I have an iPad, pretty similar to an iPhone, I just use google drive app. I currently have 1TB google drive.

iTunes is the program which syncs multimedia I think, I've never used it.

There's other apps as Abe mentioned, he seems to be a big Apple fan, hopefully he steered you in the right direction.

Good luck in your quest, I just cancelled my cell phone because I'm unemployed now. When it is time for a new phone I am sticking with Android or whatever is next that Google comes up with, I am a Google fanboy. Seems to be able to do a lot more with Android devices, the Pixel line is great.

Just did this for my wife tonight. Go to Settings. ICloud. Storage. Get the 1 TB cloud storage. Will last you a lifetime. It is safe and secure by most standards.

What you missed is that I already have storage that can be accessed with an internet Connection/Cell Phone Connection. It's my NAS and it's Free and I have 9TB.

I want files to reside on my Phone that require no external connection. This is a major shortcoming and can be done with a couple mouse clicks on Android. Unacceptable for me!

there is an app I bought at one point for my iPad, a SMB file manager (to access NAS), it costs some $$$, if your interested I can check my ipad store and figure out what the name of it was when I had it installed. if it is still on apple app store I can try to give you the name of it.

BH --- Again, I have no trouble accessing my NAS with an App provided by Synology.

The Problem is that you have to have an internet/phone connection to use it.

SOMETIMES, I DON"T HAVE A CONNECTION !!

RE: Advice needed from an iphone expert..................., posted on May 30, 2017 at 16:26:52
I misread, can't you copy the files over to your documents in your iphone then with the Synology NAS app? Assuming you have WiFi now can't you just copy everything over? copy-paste?

that's why I mentioned the SMB file manager app I used. It might be $5, let me see if I can find the name of it, it was rather good.

I'll chime back here.

there are a couple of things you must do:

1. Transcode content into MP4. I use dbPowerAmp which makes quick work out of converting any number of folders.
2. Point iTunes to the MP4 based library
3. Upload!

Not really a problem if you understand what makes it happy.

But, I am a little gun shy now, as such a Basic Function does not come with the Standard O/S.... It does in Android...

It's like Apple does not want you to get at their files..... Even worse, is if they don't want you to get at your files, will an App come down the pike that 'upends' the File Browser App. ---

File Access of a computer is about the most basic App that you need. Whether Desktop, Laptop or Palmtop (Phone)

I had thought that MP4 was only for Music ? --- Music Files are the only ones that I DON'T want to load to my iPhone?

I want to load Text Files, Photos, Videos, PDF Files, etc. etc.

So, I am confused by your answer.

RE: Yes, this looks like it would work......................, posted on May 30, 2017 at 17:01:51
I usually would agree, but from using iOS on the iPad for many years, it is all worth it, and as a warning you do get "dumber" as you use the Apple stuff. I bought a Macbook pro a few months ago, it after a couple of months I still don't know how to use it, they say I should go to a class for how to use it.

supposed to be very easy if you get it, it does take awhile to get used to iOS because it is natural interface, not technical like I gather both of us are used to.

Yes, their reason is "security" the same type of guys who go to Bilderberg meetings, sure.

As a thought just a thought, I think cell phones are tracking devices, when I did carry one around I used a metal mesh holder for it to block the NSA.

Regardless, if you are a fundamentalist stick with Android. Either google or open source releases.

Again, I like the Pixel line of phones.

I want to load Text Files, Photos, Videos, PDF Files, etc. etc.

Text files are stored in Notes
Photos are stored under - well photos
Videos are stored under - well videos
PDF Files are stored using a number of applications - I use iBooks.

There really are solutions to all your questions once you understand the environment. :)

Yup, I use a Phone more of a 'Palm top Computer'.... I rarely make or receive calls.... I never Text -- Always e-mail , that way I can pick up the communication from any device I have. Whether, Desktop, Laptop, Pad or Phone.

I have proven to myself today that I am an Android Guy.... I will look at the Pixel Phones.... I would like a Better Camera and Camera Software, Better Display, Faster etc.

I had no idea that Apple did not allow access to Files. That's the first thing I do when I get a computer, Figure out how to Manage Files, Store, Copy, Retrieve, Search, delete etc......

I only use apple stuff. For both home and work. Except for my Roon server which I guess is Linux.
I was forced to switch to a Windows laptop years ago at work and I was miserable. I despised every second of its ugly existence.

My book keeper is strictly Windows. I sent her an iPad because she needs to see whats going on with our POS software. She refuses to use it. Says it makes no sense. I'm baffled.

Its just what you are used to. Once you are in the Apple architecture almost everything isa no brainer. I honestly don't even understand your problem. All my contacts reside only phone. As do my photos and music. I use gmail but thats the only thing I need an internet connection for.

It is a phone and media consumption device. It is not a handheld computer replacement. It is also an ecosystem unto itself, and is designed to make it difficult to do what YOU want it to do (as opposed to what Apple will allow you to do). It is designed to not be compatible with non apple devices or non allowed operation. Android/MS/Pixel phones are essentially hand held utility boxes that can easily do what YOU want. Downside is operation may be more diy than Apple products.

I use an iphone and ipad. i do not use Mac computers.

A year ago I jumped into the Apple iOS world and I was horrified for the exact same reason you give. No user access to the file system.

It took some time but I worked around it. The app called transfer is a sort of word around. It has its own internal so you can move files into transfer and then copy from there to other apps.

Another useful trick was to install an sftp server on my windows computer. Transfer can use that, so can the flac player app.

In general I can get files in and out of iOS without iTunes, although I still hate the design. Otoh, I have 3 tablets and I only use the iPad. It's just better in every way and since it's the monster in the tablet world, apps work better in general than their android versions. So yes my next phone may be an iPhone despite iOS.

Oh by the way what drove me to Apple? I had 2 google tablets that failed and google support was so poor that I will probably not buy another google product. If an Apple tablet had hardware failures just out of warranty, it would be in the news and Apple could not just say too bad. Google basically did that.

As far as Tablets, I use an Asus 10 inch with detachable keyboard (Which I never detach. It runs a full blown Windows 10 O/S. Had it for 3 years and no problems.

I returned the Apple iPhone and picked up a Samsung S8 (Cost $100 more, and couldn't' be happier. It is much faster and I can add a MicroSD card up to another 256GB.... (Phone comes with 64GB of internal Storage). It's also waterproof for up to 30 minutes at 3 feet. I can also run all the same apps that I was used to that Apple didn't support. And the File interface is seamless to me and the rest of my computers.

I found the jump to iPhone a PITA as far as file handling.

I have all of my business on an SD card on the Palm Treo and I could attach any and many of those files, .pdf, .doc, whatever, to any email I sent.

iPhone is little more than an iPod with a phone built into it while the Palm Treo was a PDA with a phone built into it.

Almost went the Blackberry route when Palm went extinct.

I went from paper based Daytimer organizer in a binder to HP 200LX to Palm to Blackberry to iPhone. There are tools available to transfer contacts, email, calendar along the way. Everything was successfully transitioned to my iPhone 4S years ago. I'm on iPhone 6S today.

I have little need for 'file handling' as I don't use my iPhone as a "PC" substitute. However, it does natively handle PDF, Word docs, PowerPoints, Excel spreadsheets, photos, etc. And I have access to any or all of my stuff via iCloud shared seamlessly between our home computers, iPads, iPods, wife's Apple Watch, and our two iPhones.

No complaints! But you do have to take a little time to 'learn it' vs throwing up your arms and clinging to the old 'file handling' ways. ;-)

The Apple environment and ecosytem just works for us.

P.S. I grew up on MS-DOS, Windows, and the "PC" and I couldn't be happier making the move in another direction almost a decade ago.

was driving down the road with a PDA in one hand and a Motorola Flip Phone in the other saying, "Why can't they be in one device?).

Steve Jobs saw a much larger number of people walking around with MP-3 players, some with NO phone at all, and the rest is, as they say, is HISTORY!

An engineer I used to work with and I had a big bet as to who would win the PDA format war, Palm or Windows.

What do engineers know? :-)

"A Galaxy S8 will catch fire, the question is how people react."

Will catch fire? Otay!

edit: It's a good thing they recalled a million of them in the US alone because of "serious fire and burn hazards."

Odd because I hated this aspect of iOS from my first day using it. As a media device, I load the iPad with audio, video, books, pictures, which are all files. This is so trivial on android.

On iOS, I found the fine Transfer app. Using that, i can ftp files into Transfer, then in most cases copy them to the appropriate app. But it's not always clean. Some apps don't communicate with Transfer so you can't do that. It is better for music files to transfer them directly into the flac player app, which has its own ftp support.

In general, I have developed pretty painless ways to get files in and out of iOS. But i still resent the design.

I have learned that some people treat Steve Jobs with a sort of religious reverence and will hear no bad word against any of his design choices. But I think this is a very poor choice. If insulating users from files is so great, why does Apple not do that on the iMac? Nobody would buy one, that's why.

Having said all that, the iPad Pro absolutely oozes quality in a way my 4 android devices do not. The screen is amazing and provides subjectively better experience of photos, video, and reading. I don't know processor specs, but apps run smoothly and quickly. Battery lasts way longer than any of my androids, I can use the iPad heavily and still have some juice at the end of the day, it probably doubles my android battery life. Things just work. I have a great dac and it works seamlessly with any audio I play on the iPad. On android, you need to get a special player that supports digital audio output, and the one I have is kind of a messy program, still a work in progress.

So as I think of a new phone, I am right on the edge of moving from Samsung to Apple, Despite still kind of hating iOS.

But google failed me. One thing you don't think about when you spend lots of money on a new toy is what if it breaks.

So I had the original nexus 7 and loved it. It broke, specifically the google books app became unusable. I did not use that app, so no big deal i thought. I did call google and their support was bad. Eventually they had me send them a log to diagnose the failure and they apparently completely ignored it. This became a big deal when this google books app failure meant I could no longer upgrade the os. I tried a manual load and the tablet became a brick, out of warranty.

Skip forward and I got the much better nexus 9. It only lasted a year before a nasty hardware failure. Intermittent but quite frequent random lockup requiring system reboot, Look it up it is common. I tried software reset, which does not work, then sent it to HTC with a note saying software reset did not work. They did a software reset and sent it back still broken. By now it was out of warranty and I had to argue to get them to extend the warranty. On its second trip to HTC they replaced the motherboard which does fix the problem. But it was a pain. Meanwhile google was completely worthless again, since I bought this from Best Buy instead of google play store they said any reapair was strictly HTC. Even though this is a google branded product. So when I wanted a latest greatest tablet I gave up on google and passed up the pixel c and got an iPad.

If mere file handling is sufficient, they why bitch about the lack of "...a full-function file manager app" and go elsewhere?

Me too?
Me either?
Me neither?

That would be because...

I'm retired!

But there was a time when the Palm Treo's file handling ability was a huge issue. I was able to carry most of the companies currently active documents, contracts, proposals, patents, results of clinical trials, everything, on a chip plugged into the phone and to easily receive, edit and attach to email, any of those documents.

And yes, with a bit of work, one can do most of those things with an iPhone and the use of what-was-not-existent-at-the-iPhone's-introduction, the 'cloud'.

Also happy to report that I'm now on my third iPhone and my 'Music' library is still completely EMPTY!

The march of iOS merging with OS-X continues but the fact is, the iPad is a poor excuse for a laptop.

Each serves a different purpose. Hence, their existence.

My wife loves her iPad Pro 9.7 so much more than her 13" MacBook Pro. I also bought a keyboard for her iPad Pro and she spends hours on it daily.

I'm just the opposite. I use my Mac laptop daily for pretty much everything. I have it hooked up to a 22" LCD screen on my desk along with a bluetooth keyboard & mouse. In those situations when I need to run off on a quick errand or whatever I take my iPhone which tucks into my pocket.

I rarely use my iPad except for occasional web browsing and as a remote control for Roon/Tidal, Audiravana Plus, iTunes, etc.

She loves the iPad as her go-to daily driver. I much prefer my Mac laptop.

In those rare occasions where I "need" Windows, I just launch a Windows 7 or Windows 10 virtual machine on the Mac using Parallels Desktop.

My wife is the same way. She is a university administrator and uses hers around campus for a number of tasks and meetings in lieu of carrying around the Macbook. She has always used a keyboard/case with hers as well.

I have a slightly newer Air version with this keyboard/case. Similarly, I prefer it for business travel to my larger laptop needed only for product demonstrations. I use the pad as movie theatre, music playback system, internet browser, email client, and use Keynote for presentations (along with iPhone as remote). For two different conferences I attended this year where I was a presenter, it was a no brainer to use the pad in that role. I use the HDMI adapter for the external display.

At home, mine lives on my bedside table and used for a range of tasks including Roku remote. With the iPeng app, it serves as a renderer to my LMS based system for listening via my Shure 535 IEMs. An older one (actually wifey's first also with keyboard) lives upstairs using iPeng as primary remote to control uRendu in main system. While also allowing checking of SPL, email and surfing while listening.

I would never schlep my laptop to the bedroom or upstairs to do those things! Although I am anything but a visionary (my wife has always taken that role with mobile electronics in my household!), I get why Ive says that he's not impressed with hybrid tablet/laptop computers.

I use the iPad Mini 4 around the house including in the bedroom to read. However, I still schlep my laptop around for meetings but I will generally carry my smaller MacBook Air 11-inch. I use the typical PowerPoint, Excel, and Word (MS Office Mac version) since my company has standardized on MS Office. Some co-workers use iPad on travel but I never warmed up to it personally.

The 11-inch MacBook Air in the Incase bag fits vertically under the airline seat in front of me so I still have plenty of leg room.

Hacked up how?

At this point, my MacBook Air USB + Jitterbug to my AudioGD DAC still seems to be 'slightly' better than the RaspberryPi HiFiBerry Digi+ Pro S/PDIF to the same DAC and that's with any and all PS upgrades I have attempted so far.

Any future 'hacks' are appreciated.
