Soon to be joined(?) by the ultraRendu with styling shared by the LPS-1.

Ok, that may be an over simplification in my subject line but does the ultraRendu actually do anything that can't be done in the original model?

I am absolutely certain the new one will sound better than the old. It has to because it costs more and those who 'upgrade' will claim that it sounds better in order to justify their purchase. ;-)

I agree that it's a good idea to move all the connectors to the back and it's nice that the ultraRendu is in a larger case that matches the LPS-1.... if you use the LPS-1.

I didn't see anything else that stood out in their features list compared to the original uRendu. Did anything stand out to you?

I finally plugged in my Sonicorbiter 2.5 micro SD card over the Memorial weekend.

There are other comments about it over at CA which suggests a new proprietary design for the computer part.

What's another $235 when our resident recording industry professional here can't explain the value of using a $15k Korean product? :)

Femto(R) clocks?

Maybe not, but I bet it will sound better.

Well - they certainly could. That question was asked in the lengthy thread I referenced.

As for me, I'm glad they are separate as my uRendu lives behind the DAC while the PS is located on a bottom rack. Pic in my gallery.

That will probably be the next "Upgrade"......:-) ........nt, posted on May 31, 2017 at 12:24:59

It will have to sound better. The more money you spend, the better it will sound!

All other things being equal (PS, etc), does it sound better than the Raspberry Pi?

If it does, (and I'm guessing it does as you could just as easily use a Pi and I recall you mentioning you had built one in the past) then why would you infer that any improvement in sound between the uRendu and the ultraRendu might be merely imagined?

It depends entirely on whether the product is offered with an in-home trial.

The uRendu is clearly a superior design technically but I cannot say that it sounds better than the current generation Raspberry Pi. My Pi was older and not running the most current OS for audio. So IMHO the uRendu certainly has the potential to sound better. But does it? Ask E-Stat as he owns a current Pi and the uRendu.

Based on current information the uRendu is not significantly different than the ultraRendu.

Sure, human nature wants me to believe that a $600 uRendu sounds better than a $100 Raspberry Pi. But does it sound better than the $1200 Bryston BDP-Pi also based on the Raspberry Pi? Of course not! The $1200 Bryston has to sound better. It costs more after all. So it also stands to reason that the more costly ultraRendu will have to sound better than my uRendu. It's nice that we have several sub $1000 streamers that sound incredible. Personally, I don't have $17K to spend on a Aurender W20. ;-)

Exactly, because in my house, without an in home trial, it's not going to make any sound at all!

Some might prefer to buy just the ultraRendu w/o the luxury of the exotic LPS-1 ??

The uRendu delivers a "just noticeable difference" (JND) over the RPI.
The LPS-1 delivers a JND over the HDPlex 100.
Starquad DC power cord for the LPS-1 delivers a JND over the generic one.
The ARC DAC8 delivers a JND over the DAC7 it replaced.
Balanced interconnects deliver a JND over the previous single ended ones.
The Sound Lab PX panels deliver a JND over the previous panels.
Using twin 20A dedicated AC lined delivers a JND over using shared lines.
Running all the sources through a conditioner delivers a JND over not.
Using aftermarket cabling delivers a JND over generic stuff.

Higher resolution systems represent an accumulation of JNDs. After the a while, they tend to add up for improved musical results! :)

As Charlie Hansen would say, this is based upon my opinion and systems and not that of my sprinkler guy or masseuse.

I'm sure the overall effect is cumulative but is every discrete JND step also a JN-Improvement?

I want to know what your sprinkler guy thinks. And how many JND are needed to equate to a $17K W20? ;-)

I have, however, purchased some stuff in the past that I found wanting so they were either sold or mothballed. The Jameco linear, for example, didn't improve the sound quality over my charger batteries.

Joey (TSG) is more a live theater kind of enthusiast. I see him and his family at the local university summer dinner series. :)

And how many JND are needed to equate to a $17K W20?

Most likely, a bunch. I would definitely be in our resident fisherman's boat as to the necessity of a home evaluation over one of those!
