on the Raspberry/HiFiBerry Digi+ combo.

Going with the middle version of the Digi+ (with isolation x-former on the S/PDIC output). Would go with the higher end one but there seems to be extra software/drivers and if (BIG IF!) I can figure out the less complicated implementation, maybe I upgrade later?

Gonna be a real challenge for this aging brain as it is.

Also where is that 'caps lock' key?

I keep hitting it BY MISTAKE.

Congratulations! I have the same gear, and it is working wonderfully for streaming files from my desktop computer (which is in another room) via WiFi to my sound system.

I use LMS on the desktop, and a Samsung tablet with Squeeze Ctrl software to control the RPi.

That is quite a fun project, I have the Pi 3 and it is a lot of fun, hope you'll have some hair left after messing around with it, as you might pull some out. If you read directions and setup everything properly you'll be great, it is just a LOT of reading and making sure you get it right. The various Linux systems for it are amazing.

This will be so easy that you will wonder why you even had a concern.

And it's only a $100....... People thought I was crazy asking for a 'return policy' on a $700 Microrendu..... I even offered someone here $100 just for a test drive.....

So, in the grand scheme of things.... this is small potatoes.

Go for it! I've got a Raspberry Pi 3 with a HiFiBerry DAC+ board. I'm using it in a small basement system, fed by the same Squeezebox server I use for my two SB Touches. (And the Linux GUI software with a browser and other programs also works great!)

I have the same setup, with a powered external USB drive plugged into the Pi (1.4 TB of wav's, 30 years of CD collection), and optical out from the Digi+ to my DAC.

Sounds great, and so nice to have my entire collection at my fingertips via my smartphone. Turn out the lights, bring the brightness on the phone down to minimum, turn up the volume, heaven! Either build a queue, or just select tracks at will. I am running RuneAudio and tickled pink with the whole thing.

Make sure you get a Hifiberry that doesn't mess with the PI due to
poor design.
They seemed to have serious EMI/RFI issues on the Pro series.

I wouldn't recommend HifiBerry at all. It's IMO a very "cheap" design.

I've been modding the DAC+ Pro:

It's been the first and also the worst HAT I had in my hands.
The Digis follow pretty much that design philosophy and quality level.

Good luck.

Do you still believe that the Boss Dac from Allo is currently the "best Plug and Play" off the shelf Dac for the Rpi

Using the HI-FI Berry image makes it pretty easy. With Roon, I think it sounds ridiculously good...and then you consider price and its a no brainer.

Power supply mods coming next.
