I ordered some chinese 6AS7s out of Hongkong from analog metric. They averaged about $15 delivered. They advertise that they can match tubes, but based on the packing I didn't see any indication of matching. Packing was adequate but was put together with recycled boxes, cardboard dividers and bits of styrofoam. Out of the box I was impressed at how uniform the tubes appeared. In my S-30 the tubes all lit up very uniformly and the elements all lined up with the same orientation. The Svetlanas seem motley by comparison. Soundwise they were not very impressive at first, but started to sound better, even good after a several days. I sent my S-30 back to Ralph for an upgrade to the latest incarnation since I have one of the early models. I'll have to do without sound for a couple of weeks since I have no backup amp. I will post my impressions when it returns. Stephen C. |
