More on Pink Floyd The Wall

Some people apparently doubted the news posted at the official Roger Waters site regarding the DVD release of The Wall. I checked with Columbia/TriStar and found that the news was true! Roger Waters is on board, and apparently, so are his former bandmates. The Wall will be a Columbia Music Video release, not a Columbia/TriStar release as most have reported. Other Pink Floyd titles may follow after this release (yes!!!). The movie is receiving a new anamorphic transfer at the legendary Sony Authoring Center and will definitely have a Dolby Digital 5.1 mix. Other possibilities for the disc, which is in the air until the band decides, are DTS support, commentary track(s), and the inclusion of deleted scenes. The tentative release date is October/November 1999.

Now if only Roger Waters and the "boys" would patch up the rest of their differences we might be treated to a genuine Pink Floyd tour and new album(s). Note: They're getting a bit long of tooth, so they'ld better get a move-on!

Hey AuPh, seeing that you appear to be a fellow Floyd fan (FFF?) I have Obscured by Clouds, playing in the CD player now, just wondering that it's one of my favorite Floyd CD's and it's practically unknown outside serious floyd fans. What's your say on this? Thought I'd ask.

I used to have the CD, but for some reason or other it no longer resides in my collection. I think it's pretty good, but a bit uneven. There is one amusing track that's actually kind of catchy in an odd perverse sort of way, but at the moment I can't recall the title (something along the lines of observations on the futility of life and the inevitability of death; it's a song with a decidedly morbid bent).

BTW, wasn't the album also a soundtrack for a film called La Valley?

Actually, I don't completely disagree with you about the movie. However, I am glad that Roger Waters signed off on it and Pink Floyd may be resolving some of their personal and business differences. That is far more important than the movie itself. I would actually buy tickets to see the band perform in a reunited line-up.

Have you listened to Pied Piper @ The Gates of Dawn? Any old Floyd material is radically different from what you hear in The Wall, beyond. I thought even Dark Side was more like their older psychodellic material. The Wall was a different departure on their usual...

"One of these days, I'm gonna cut you into pieces!"
....then continue into one of the most influential pieces of music in my life that redefined what I loved about Pink Floyd into more appreciation for what they were trying to tell us.

Yeah, some French film I think.. I know the song you're talking about, but I forget the title. I think most of the songs are kind of surreal, in the Kafka kind of sense!!!

Yeah, I have that on tape. I have all the Floyd albums and some Roger Waters solo stuff on tape, I only have some of them on CD's. My sister had the Wall and DSOTM on LP. My callsign for when I was a freshman in college and forced to program in SCHEME on a Mac Classic was "cirrus Minor" which somebody completely surprised me by recognizing that as a song from "More" I think. I was surprised but amused at that.

I really haven't listened to alot of the earlier floyd due to most of them I have on tape and I rarely power up the tape deck these days..

I have those on tape, my Saucerful is on the same as Pipers. I also have Roger Water's Radio Kaos and Pros and Cons on tape. I even have one tape of Syd Barretts. I have a LP of David Gilmour even though I don't have a player! but I have About Face. I was actually listening to More last night, brings back my college years!

Syd Barrett, posted on March 22, 1999 at 09:55:59

Maybe it's just me, but I think of Syd Barrett as the real founder of Floyd, and Roger as the one who sustained it when Syd had his problems.

I like "Piper" quite a bit, but I admit to a strong preference for DSOTM on vinyl (is there a good CD version, PLEASE?) and Final Cut on CD.

The record "Obscured by Clouds" was the music for the movie "Obscured by Clouds" -a very intreguing movie by the way, of the '70's. Pink Floyd did not create the movie, however.

Holy Floyd!! I found it, after going through my thousands of vinyl. EMI SHSP 4020. Obscured by Clouds: music from the film "La Valle'e". My error in my old age, -sorry. Music was composed and produced by Pink Floyd in 1972 ( I bet I haven't played it since 1972 so I better go up and play it now). As I recall, this rather haunting movie was about a group of hippies searching for their "Shangrala" as they hike through jungles and the Hymallas. Also, as I recall, the music is not typical Pink Floyd, -but then I'm going to listen to it again, for sure.
The film was directed by Barbet Schroeder with Bulle Ogier, Jean Pierre Kalfon and Michael Gothard. Produced by Les Films de Losange.
