I considered them a reptiles when they were big and later I only heard their songs on drunken nostalgia parties. But I'm old enough now and frankly there is nothing not to like about them. (except the ridicules costumes and questionable video clips)

ABBA was way down on my list of interesting acts - in fact, I really didn't know there stuff, and had no interest.

In 2008 I attended the SWIFT payment conference in Vienna, and the last night was a huge party in the Imperial Palace Helluva place to party, I bet Franz Josef had a great time there. There was a karaoke room, and they were dying - I mean, in that kind of setting who has the guts to go on stage and sing? So one of my colleagues and I were in the front row (we were late, the only seating), and the folks running the karaoke knew that they dying a fast death in that room and begged us to come up and sing. We said "what the hell", and jumped up on stage. But they song they picked for we two guys to sing was "Dancing Queen" - and I had to tell them I couldn't do it because I did not know the song at all! Elvis would have been better.

Fast forward to 2021, and I was listening to stuff on YouTube, and what comes up but Waterloo? I was actually amazed at how great of a pop song it is, and how well constructed. So I also listened to Dancing Queen, and went wow, what a great job! Serious ear worms, as well.

Yeah, they were pretty cheesy. but all in fun, right? I just bought the two LP set ABBA Gold and plan to play it at parties.

I think more than any other pop group in history, ABBA was maybe the biggest experiment by the English speaking network media, in regard to "shaping" popularity in music. Or in other words, conjuring up numbers proclaiming "popularity," and then the masses buying into it and piling on.......

I'll never forget rock star Steven Wilson (who is maybe the best in the business right now) proclaiming ABBA as the "second biggest pop group in history" (behind the Beatles), and I was thinking: Was ABBA actually more popular than Michael Jackson? ........

Oh Lord, all pop music from the 80's should just be excised from the universe. On balance the universe would be a much better place.

Fair enough. But what's your school of thought on this.

A system that allows you to listen to for hours is too colored to be any good or a system that drives you from the room with the average recording is the best and most revealing?

IMO just an OK system is good enough to listen without getting tired of it.

One the other hand some would argue my system must be colored if I can listen to the "quality" of recordings I normally play without getting bothered or worn out by it.

But my system is so good I get tired out because I can only handle the excitement of listen to it for so long.

You made the comment - I'm just curious as to what the point of it is.

Nope nothing at all for me to dislike about them, nothing at all.

ABBA ruled in 70's not 80's :) I have have a weak spot for 80's eurotrash. It was a revolutionary decade in Poland and music went along with it
