Yo Geo, is this your list? Sure looks like it would be better than the previous list. I must say I'm shocked, shocked I tell you that it is void of any Chet Baker and Art Farmer selections. I'll forgive you this one time since there many excellent choices on this list. Will give me a lot of new recordings to explore. You did leave a few out, like Chet in New York, Chet's Choice, Art Farmer's "The Summer Knows", Abby Lincoln's " A Turtle's Dream and "Abby is Blue". Bill Evan's dates should include " You Must Believe in Spring", desert island stuff. "I Will Say Goodbye", "Reflections" and "Interplay" are also excellent. Someone at my previous work was friends with Ambrose's father and turned me on to this fine player. Well I could go on... Oh, you missed Sonny Rollins Vol I with the tune Decision. T456

I could not include them all! I love Chet Baker's Chet and Chet in New York, among others....Yep on Abby Lincoln....I just had to pick a few by each artist. That Sonny Rollins Quintet date that you noted is OUTSTANDING...

it would have been nicer just to have a few select recordings that would be a good guide to assist beginners to start with.

i will add one-oliver nelson-blues and the abstract truth. a good example of what happens when you put a whole group of exemplary musicians together for a great performance.

I forgot Stan Getz's "Voyage". Also desert island stuff IMHO. And don't forget "Midnight Blue" by Kenny Burrell, another must.

It is a few....also, I was thinking of that 100 list down the thread. That's a great Oliver Nelson date. I have all of his records as a leader.

Some of jimmy Smith's records like walk on the wild side has oliver as a leader of the orch. and who's afraid of Virginia Wolf too.

The sound is unmistakable.

Yes - of course Larry Young. I love Into Something but the disc I play most is Talkin About, and favourite track "I'm an Old Cowhand". Elvin is marvellous and Grant Green is.... just himself.

Thanks for reminding me of the Freddy Hubbard discs - a couple I don't have. I have all the Wayne Shorters on the list. And love that Pete La Rocca disc - I used to play it a lot.

My omissions are:

Clifford Jordan - Glass Bead Games, Live At Ethels etc
Ahmad Jamal - Pionciana Revisited, if only for the Valley of the Dolls Theme, and some...
Art Blakey - Free for All, with a stunning Wayne Shorter arrangement of Pensativa
Archie Sheep and Horace Parlan - Goin' Home, Trouble in Mind.

I had the huge fortune to do a small tour with Horace Parlan. What a lovely guy, and those chords....just made in heaven.

I had Archie Shepp in my taxi once a long time ago. I said to him something like your pretty famous or well know right? His response was likely a common one. He complained he never made any real money. Had to play in Europe to get by. Celine Deon's net worth is like 700 mill. Nice cut from Archie. T456

Love those Shepp/Parlan albums. Soulful defined. nt, posted on June 22, 2017 at 23:06:44

I was inspired by this thread to go on YT and listen to a lot of Shepp. My God - it's good and wears very well. I listened to Fire Music - The Girl From Ipanema will never be the same! I heard Archie's band play this music on tour with Miles Davis and to me it was the high point of the evening. The transition from Hambone to Prelude to a Kiss was magical live.

Then I listened to Four For Trane, then Mama Too Tight (very fun funk track)... and so on.

No one, absolutely no one plays the sax like Shepp. Respect!

Great list. I appreciate this kind of effort.

I am not a jazz guy, but certainly invested a lot of time and money towards it....

Just curious, I guess to anyone that wants to respond.

Doesn't Keith Jarrett - Koln belong on this list? I mean I have listened to that album so many damn times that I think I could play it, and I am not a piano player, or a musician for that sake. It's in my Physical Grafitti, Joshua Tree, What's Going On and Tonight's the Night list for # of rotations.

Just looking for feedback.

BTW I saw him live twice at the SF Opera House. He is just beyond my reach in comprehension. I love that. It's what I used to like about Jerrt Garcia, albeit when he was intentionally pushing us, as opposed to being dragged down by a sluggish heart from Hair Ron, Hagen Daz and unfilters.
