Rod asked for our top 5 sound good/audition discs, now lets get some
list of desert island music. List the top 10 discs you would have
to have with you on the proverbial desert island. Mine are (in no
particular order of preference):

Ella Fitzgerald - Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie - best recording she
ever made

Roy Eldridge - Little Jazz - a collection of recordings Roy made
with various people during the 30s and 40s. Wonderful stuff,
including some great stuff with Chu Berry on tenor.

Art Tatum - Group Masterpieces # 8 with Ben Webster.

Thelonius Monk - Alone in San Francisco.

Fats Waller - any good 20 tune compilation

Count Basie - the complete Decca recordings. The best band Basie
ever had, and those wonderful swinging head arrangements

Duke Ellington - the Blanton/Webster Band. Best band Duke ever
had

Ray Brown Trio - Summer Wind (Live at The Loa) - Gene Harris on
piano and Jeff Hamilton on drums, this is just killer blues
drenched jazz trio.

Jazz at Massey Hall - Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Bud Powell,
Max Roach, Charles Mingus. Bebop never got any better than this.

Frank Sinatra - Songs for Swingin' Lovers.

Laurie Anderson, Strange Angels (vinyl, oh yes!)
'nuff said

Lyle Lovett, Pontiac or L.L and his Large Land (vinyl)
tough choice!

Cage/Varese/Faberman, Percussion Ensembles (vinyl)
this will keep cannibals at bay

Ring, Soul to the Pleasure (cd)
Harps, percussion, atmosphere .... ahhhhhhhhhhh

Etta Baker, One Dime Blues (cd)
she may be 80+ years old, but she can do it!

Robert Gordon, Fresh Fish Special (vinyl)
can't be without some rock-a-billy ...

everything but the girl, Amplified Heart (cd)

Egerto Gismonti and Nana Vasconcelos, Duas Vozes (vinyl)
simple, yet complicated guitar, piano and percussion from South America

Housemartins, The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death (vinyl)
way too much fun!

Ricky Lee Jones, Flying Cowboys (vinyl)

1.Bach:Goldberg Variations/Gould
2.Beethoven:Piano Sonatas 8,13,&14/Gilels
3.Schumann:Kinderscenen;Kreisleriana/Argerich
4.Mozart:String Quartets 16&17/Guarneri Quartet
5.Dvorak:Symphonies 8&9/Kubelik
6.Green Linnet 20th Anniversary Collection(2 CDs)
7.(Place taken by Green Linnet 2 CD set)
8.Favorite Encores/Horowitz
9.The Man and His Music/Sam Cooke
10.Kind of Blue/Miles Davis

I think that's probably what I'd take to a desert island if forced to, pretty much in that order of preference. The classical selections are based more on the compositions than the specific recordings.

Ever wondered what happened to the Housemartins?

Ans: They added Jacqueline Abbott, and became ... Beautiful South! :-)

Only 5! this is tough, as it leaves out just too much good stuff. But if I were desperate and had to grab 5 real fast, it would be the following (though if you ask me again in another month, they might change):

Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland

Pink Floyd - Meddle

Pat Methany - New Chatauqua

Music of Debussey - Eugene Ormandy & Phila. Orchestra (2 LPs)

Loreena McKennitt - The Visit

wow...I wish I could take some more. But on the other hand, this desert island is going to have some good music on it if everyone else shows up.

Okay, here's my list (no particular order):

Grand Funk Railroad "Bosnia" (2 CD set, live)
Jimi Hendrix "First Rays Of the New Rising Sun"
Genesis "Selling England by the Pound" (remastered)
Yes "The Yes Album" (remastered)
UFO "Phenomenon/Force It" (remastered 2 on 1)
Black Sabbath "Master of Reality" (remastered reality!)
Jethro Tull "Aqualung" (gold remaster)
Uriah Heap "Salisbury" (remastered w/extras)
King Crimson "The Great Deceiver" (4 CD set, live '72-'74)
Aerosmith "Toys in the Attic" (remastered)

I would also try to slip in Yes's "Fragile" (remastered"), and some Rolling Stones, AC/DC (w/Bon), and Cream, if I could get through your tight customs limitation. ;-)

Had to fly into Seattle today on business, so over lunch, I picked two of their ceedees. Looking forward to hearing them. Thanks for the tip.
