on Chandos.

Back side of the SACD is pictured above to remind Chris that it's 'multi-channel'. ;-)

This is a great piece of music, IMNSHO. But I like my 'Brits' and have a fair collection on the Lyrita label.

And Gardiner and his BBC band knock it out of the park.

First they came for the dumb-asses
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a dumb-ass

You will find this an interesting comparison.

I find the Barenboim lacking in true Elgarian spirit . By this I mean that he allows every detail of the score to emerge whilst losing what I would term the abstract narrative of the piece ( i.e the main picture). Elgar did not intend every detail to be highlighted in this way. In fact he is recorded as saying that there are details in his scores not really intended to be heard by the audience but to give the instumentalist something interesting to play ( the result of his own experience as an orchestral player).

Still, if you do find the Barenboim preferable after hearing the Gardiner then so be it :-)

Glad you like it. I do too and was having a hard time fining a version I liked mt, posted on May 14, 2017 at 07:45:53
