I was attracted to this record by the Goya painting on the cover. Not a good criteria for buying I know. Granados: Goyescas for Piano by Yoonie Han. Should I buy it? If so, why? Thanks, JD II

streaming service like TIDAL, QOBUZ, or Deezer Elite.

Both TIDAL and QOBUZ have the album in question in their catalog for streaming.

How good is lossless FLAC?

On a good day with REALLY good recordings, I can tell the difference between QOBUZ or TIDAL and a ripped CD from my hard drive, all other things being equal. That's about it. Yes, enough so that I still buy CDs but it's because I listen more (with streaming) and find more music I want to own.

IMNSHO, if you want MUCH better than lossless FLAC streaming over the internet, you're going to have to download hi-rez.

Very safe bet is Alicia de Larrocha on RCA. Nt, posted on April 15, 2017 at 07:17:53

She pretty much owned the music.

De Alicia de Larrocha is the benchmark for this work, her next to last recording on DECCA is my favorite both for sound and interpretation. I would also recommend a superb performance on BIS SACD performed by Joop Celis.

Hard to argue with that., posted on April 15, 2017 at 08:42:42
Gets me nowhere in my "disagree with jdaniel" campaign. I'll have to get to that another day.

. . . and, certainly, there's nothing wrong with Alicia's performances (I have the album shown in ivan303's post myself), I suspect the Yoonie Han recording is certainly a valid alternative. My own favorite is the album by Michel Block on the Pro Piano label:

The reason I really like this recording is for the extraordinary tone quality (of course, since we're dealing with a piano, I should really say tonal balance!) which Block has the rare skill to project. If you hear this recording, I'm sure you'll notice it in comparison to other recordings. For some reason, Block played a lot of Albeniz/Granados repertoire, and always with, as I said, extraordinary results - his magnificent recording of Albeniz' Iberia (originally available in the US only on the Connoisseur Society label) seems to be available now only in France on an EMI boxed set which contains other less compelling performances (IMHO) by other pianists of other Spanish repertoire. (And for some strange reason, many of the dealers there refuse to export this album to the US - go figure!) I'm basing my comments on the Connoisseur Society LP's, since I haven't heard the EMI CD reissue.

Getting back to Yoonie, her recordings of the Goyescas pieces are also available on uTube, so you could sample the performances before you commit to buying the album. I've been listening to them while I've been typing this post, and they do sound good to me - maybe a note here and here I don't agree with - LOL! I must also observe with approval that some of the uTube videos show that Yoonie is a proponent of the Yuja Wang school of concert attire - at least as far as the exposed thighs are concerned! ;-)

Finally, I would like to warn you that my own performance of the most famous of the Goyescas pieces, Quejas, o La maja y el ruisenor - The Maiden and the Nightingale (on a beat-up godforsaken upright piano in a Berkeley church), is available (I think) on CD Baby and (maybe) iTunes. This album resulted from a concert I did with a singer who released these performances without my approval or knowledge. An occupational hazard, I guess!

EDIT: I just checked CD Baby and my solo performance of The Maiden and the Nightingale no longer seems to be listed - although the vocal version of this work (wherein I'm the accompanist) is still on one of the albums. Anyway, I'm grateful!

It's not as if there are 200+ recordings a person has to plow through before offering up an educated opinion.

Personally, I'd reserve SFTH comments for the next Kleiber Beethoven 5/7 recommendation.

I put in actual time and effort (nearly a full minute in some cases), then you toss out mots like your "organ entrance" post. I know when I've been beaten.

I really like Martin Jones in this repertoire. His Mompou, Guastavino, Francaix (and more) are also very fine.

It's been a long time, but I don't believe there's such a thing as a minor augmented triad? , posted on April 17, 2017 at 09:40:53
IIRC, "+" is augmented 5th symbol.

So we end up with E G and B# (C).

Again, it's been awhile; I just wanted to play "name the **tune**."

I'm not seeing any "+" sign in your example, nor am I see a B-sharp. Sure, B-sharp is the enharmonic equivalent of a C-natural, but that's not what you're showing in your example. Am I missing something?

I figured it was a trick question, so I left the CMaj inverted. nt, posted on April 17, 2017 at 20:00:16

The original "chord" was e/g/b#, which is Cmaj of course, but in first inversion. I'll take half a point deduction then.

OK - I guess I didn't see that one (and I still don't - but that's fine) [nt], posted on April 18, 2017 at 18:04:28

. . . with composers such as mature Ravel, Debussy, Scriabin. . . (And besides, I now forget where the chord was and I'd need to find it again! Certainly, with a chord spelled like that, one would expect it to "resolve", but I don't remember that it really does. And that would not be out of character for Ravel, or the other composers I mentioned, at this stage of their respective careers. . . I've now spent some time looking for it, and now I'm thinking I may have misread it: there's a chord in part II, six measures before the stage indication "Bryaxis veut l'entrainer", but that chord has a G-sharp in the bass, not a G-natural - making it an augmented triad. Now I'm not sure if that's the one I saw previously or not!)

In any case, with Daphnis, Ravel clearly gives the impression that the ballet as a whole is in A major - the work starts and ends with the A-major key signature, and that final orgiastic shout is in A-major, although there are lots and lots of changes in the key signature along the way! ;-)

The uTube link below is of course not the original choreography (and it's not even the whole work), but at least it conveys the kind of extreme sensuality of much of the ballet.
