OH man: Campoli's Tchaikovsky VC available at HDTT. I like the Heifetz but....

Campoli's early Decca is just a stunning recording: huge soundstage, holographic, and some passages of uncanny realism. I don't like Campoli in everything but his Tchaikovsky is as sweet, lyrical (and feisty) as can be. One of my treasured Lps.

The Graffman/Cleveland PC 1 is included. Ironically one of my last lp finds. It was reviewed very positively. IIRC it's relatively well -recorded and very good performance .

This is what the album artwork looks like on QOBUZ.

Yes, another great DECCA recording, from the era of great DECCA recordings!

I might spring for it as well (the cheapo DVD-A version, of course). :-)

Espana very good but humbly think the Campoli better recorded. In any case a very satisfying VC. Nt, posted on April 12, 2017 at 16:23:47

But they don't say where they got it (15ips tape or whatever).

That said, the stream from QOBUZ is VERY good!

REALLY liked the first movement.

I can see why you like it!

You're right about Decca's effort with this. I just wish HDTT would have listed the download's provenance.

Oh, and you're costing me money, jd. :-)

Tell me about money. I just recently downloaded the Heifetz.

I'm glad sound quality impressed you, even without knowing the provenance.

Not only is the VC tacked onto the Qobuz version but also onto the download version made available by Decca to its partners e.g. Presto Classical.

This seems to be a result of the original album being too short for these digital days. In order to pad it out to 70 minutes or so Decca appear to have tacked on the Campoli apparently solely as it was a piece of the right length but without any artistic regard to the Spanish theme of the album. In the CD release they padded it with Debussy Images where at least Iberia did make sense in the context of the disc.

Its sound quality was evident from the opening passage., posted on April 12, 2017 at 22:27:55

I've now listened all the way through and remain impressed with both the performance and the sonics, and not least the openness of the venue acoustic of the now-departed Kingsway Hall captured by the Decca mikes.

Thanks for the heads-up.

performance of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto as a filler piece.

I quite enjoyed it and, if the folks here like the HDTT version I might be forced to spring for the 'poor man's' Hi Rez download from HDTT. That would be the no-jeweled-box 24/192 DVD-A for $9 plus media mail shipping. Last order I placed with them during a sale and I got four DVD-A for about $7.50 each with a total shipping/handling of about $5.

Now all I gotta do is figure out how to 'rip' DVD-As to my hard drive.

Double Oh man, they just released Ansermet's Ravel L'Enfant, posted on April 14, 2017 at 19:35:49

"from a 15ips tape."

Really hard to choose between Maazel's and Ansermet's. Both magical, the DGG astonishingly well-recorded, though the recording palm still goes to Decca.

I don't think that either has been surpassed, so once again, I have to break my pledge to only support living artists.

Releasing it before April 18 was pretty evil though. : ) Uncle Sam gest very jealous.

The Maazel recording on vinyl is one of the best I have. The performances are wonderful, and the sense of space his just stunning.

I'm so glad you agree. What happened to Maazel and DGG after? Don't know, but the vocalists really "become", posted on April 14, 2017 at 19:58:40
in that recordings. Fantastic singing, especially Berbie as Le feu.

Maazel's is a bit dark, Ansermet's more light. In any case I marvel over Ravel's imagination.

I went ahead and bought the Ansermet DSD file, but my Marantz can't play it, even with Audirvana.
I don't know if they will let me trade it in for a .flac or DSD 64 version. If not, perhaps I can offer it to someone else here....

Listened to the Campoli Tchaik VC performance..... I thought it was OK, but not great.......

The Graffman/Szell Tchaik PC1 is excellent, however.

My favorite is still Heifetz but I just can't resist Campoli's golden strands of sweet melody, not that he can't be feisty too.

Who is your favorite in this material. I take it you're a big Cleveland fan? Szell's Don Quixote is unsurpassed IMHO.
