Had a first listen today to Dohnanyi's piano music, volume 2 in a series of 3 on Hyperion, performed by Martin Roscoe. Features Op 2, Op 4, Op 17, and Valses nobles after Schubert. Very enjoyable stuff, and excellent recording.

Hot deal alert: Available from Amazon for only $40, or brand new from BRO for $7!

Anyone know if the other two volumes are as wonderful as this one?

Peace,
Tom E

The Twinkle variations is one of his less attractive works, in my opinion, but still not bad. I think the primary reason it's "popular" is due to the theme being universally recognized.

This piano music is far superior, as is much of his chamber music: the piano quintets, the cello sonata, serenade for string trio, etc. I also like the piano concertos. I liked all this music so much, I decided to try the solo piano music, and it is a pleasant discovery.

. . . I hold the Variations on a Nursery Tune in higher esteem than you do. Just by luck, I happened to be listening to the Kocsis/Fischer (Philiips) recording earlier this afternoon (via the flash drive in my car). Dohnanyi is one of those composers for whom the term, "unjustly neglected", was coined!

Another piece I enjoy by Dohnanyi (even though it's a bit more anonymous sounding) is the (unnumbered) piano quartet he wrote when he was 14 - Mozart and Mendelssohn don't have anything on Dohnany as far as Wunderkindheit goes! And that Sextet with piano, Op. 37, is too much - if that last movement doesn't get your toe tapping, nothing will!

It's another piece we played in SFB. Some interesting harmony, AIR., posted on March 30, 2017 at 07:22:12
