Listening to KDFC as I work through some relatively boring stuff this am. Right now they are playing the Concerto for 2 violins in d-minor. Julia Fischer and friend, so non HIP.

My favorite Bach recordings:

Brandenburgs - Harnoncourt/Concentus Musicus, the first recording.

Goldberg Variations - Gould, first and second recordings (very different), Kirkpatrick, and Gilbert.

Christmas Oratorio -again, Harnoncourt's first recording, although I also enjoy the Netherlands Bach Society on Channel Classics.

E.Power Biggs playing various works, including the Toccata and Fugue in d-minor

Parkening Plays Bach.

Some of these are LPs, some SACDs, some CDs.

I am not as familiar with the violin sonatas/partitas or the cello suites as I would like to be, nor the b-minor Mass. I am more familiar with the St. Matthew Passion, but I have a hard time getting inside it.

Happy Listening

The Sonatas for Violin and Harpsichord are Bach at his lyrical best. The Flute Sonatas too.

Since you're an Lp guy, Grumiaux's Box set on Philips is perfectly fine. He has an additional single Philips lp with a couple more Sonatas that include Cello.

For the Flute Sonatas, there's a UK CRD box set with Savall.

All the above are analog.

Yes - isn't it wonderful! (My wife and I saw her do these concertos with the ASMF in Berkeley a few years ago.) I love the way J-Fi stands up for music and justice!

BTW, the friend is Alexander Sitkovetsky.

But after that it will be Podger & Pinnock play the violin sonatas.

I've read other people raving about the Grimiaux. I bought the CD set.

The violin is front and center and the harpsichord is somewhere in the background. The problem is that the harpsichord has lots of counterpoint that relates to the violin. I pretty much couldn't hear what was going on.

I have the Laredo/Gould but Gould's playing, and I am a fan, is so bizarre in this case that it really doesn't cut it.

I need a recording that close mics the harpsichord or one with piano.

Recommendations?

Halubek's harpsichord is easier to hear, and quite pleasant-sounding.

were I still stein lifting.

Well Tempered Clavier - Richter. (Like the Till Fellner too)

Cello Suites - Starker, RCA.

Brandenburgs - Jordi Savall, Les Concert de Nations

Goldberg Variations - Gould, first and second recordings.

Like the Hillary Hahn Sonatas/Partitas.

The Air by Ansermet/La Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, possibly one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever.

Plus a LOT of various Cantatas.

There IS no bad Bach despite some... lesser... interpretations.

I actually find it hard to listen to some of the Bach of old -- Edwin Fischer, Casals, Thibaud, Cortot, etc. Even today's non-HIPsters are usually HIPper than that.

. . . I completely agree with you about the people you named. (Well, I don't really know Thibaud's recordings, but, just on general principles. . . !)
