This is Pumpkin, a 4 yo female that my daughter gave to my mom as a 'rescue'

Pumpkin's first human was one of my daughter's friends, an army buddy from a small unit she was attached to as a photographer. He was sent on an extended overseas deployment, and asked her to take care of Pumpkin (with the 2 cats she already has) while he was gone.

Alas, he was killed in an accident while deployed. So, my daughter (and her very patient husband) now had 3 cats. It worked ok for a while, but now that they're expecting in October - one cat too many.

So far, so good, Pumpkin is a sweet, docile attention sponge, should be perfect for my rather lonely and bored widowed mom. Hope it works out.

Back for a bit again. Ignore me if you like.

And not judgemental at all.

Should work well for your mom.

Some people might be offended by this, but that's their problem.

Cats don't have any affection for we humans. They just want to be fed and have a place to live, pee and defecate.

Prove me wrong.

Yet again.

You do a pretty good job proving yourself wrong on a regular basis, do you really
think you need our help?

I liked that story. Cat's are definitely independent, but that doesn't mean they don't like attention. Reminds me of that retired politician in previous Spanish owned territory.

Good looking cat.

Animals (this includes cats) do wonders for people that may be alone
often. If the personalities click, cats are very loving and supporting and
usually they love attention and will reciprocate. Frequently this is completely
THEIR choice and trying to force it (or get it on demand as with a dog)
just plain won't work.

If Pumpkin and Mom click it should lead to longer lives for both, as they will
both have that much more to live for.

Pumpkin... October... a grand kid on the way (congratulations!)...a really nice photo...
a really nice post. Thanks!

I had a cat, Bart. He insisted on being an indoor/outdoor cat. When I let him in in the morning I would immediately put food down for him. He would ignore it until he'd had 10 minutes to rub up against me, purr, and renew our friendship. Then he would eat.

OK. Whatever works for you and he.

My kids told me that when our cat (Annie) heard my car coming down the street she'd lift her head, listen more closely and then head for the door to greet me.

When I came in she'd follow me upstairs while I changed and then back downstairs to sit with the kids, and she'd immediately jump in my lap, purring like crazy and rubbing against me.

All that affection ...and I'm not the one who fed her. Imagine that.

Especially if we play with them. They become eternal kittens, and they show us the same affection they show to the mother cat.
I get affectionately greeted by our cats regardless of where I am in the house or what I have in my hand.
But if I suddenly started to mistreat them, they'd have no problem switching allegiance to somebody else.
They truly love my wife. All animals do. She's like Mary Poppins in that regard.
The reality is that dogs display affection for humans for largely the same reasons except that as pack animals, they find security in acceptance by the pack leader.
Cats get their security from the one who provides food and play.

The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.

My dog stay with me 24/7 and when I'm just sitting around he watches me in case I get up. His life is focused on me. Our 2 cats only interact with me if they want something (fed or petted). Otherwise they ignore me.
So I see what your saying.

My dog, it's all about me. The cats it's all about them.

Ha! That's funny, and I think true!

Our son has a cat. I don't understand why. When we visit him, the cat wants attention. When I ignore him (the cat), he goes away. We've built a relationship: I ignore him, and he 'mostly' ignores me. It generally works just fine, except I have shoo him away every now and then.

On the other hand, my SIL's humongous (125 Lbs) Chocolate Lab dog is ALWAYS happy to be petted or lay on your feet.

A fun one came across my FB page today.

Dogs prepare you for having a baby.

Cats prepare you for having teenagers.

I like cats and dogs. To me Cats are easy-going and relaxing pets - I like that they often keep to themselves - They wander in sit on your lap for a time and get a pat - they don't need to be walked - you don't have to pick up their poop (which makes me puke a little) and they're just generally easier to take care of across the board. Dogs are more active and "fun."

I think a lot of this though is the way humans have different expectations of pets. You can do a lot of the same things with a Cat - they can be trained - there is a couple on my island here who walk their cat - he's on a leash. They tell me he will chase and bring back a ball - a small ball but a ball nonetheless. Is he a unique cat or is it that most cat owners would not think to train a cat in the same way they would a dog?

And I would not mistake a cat's aloof nature to not caring - if you read up about cats they can view their human family as "their family" and they will defend you.

This video is the ultimate in a dog lover's cat.

I think if you have cats you can appreciate them (albeit they have different personalities). I had an aloof cat who would not sit in your lap and rarely purred - it was an abused cat we took from the pound - it was supposed to only live 6 months due to an enlarged heart.

It lived 18 more years. We would walk half a mile to the 7/11 and the cat would follow 20-30 feet behind. It usually stayed with us - wanted to be in the same room but not on us.

Love is a funny word anyway as a lot of humans love people for "providing" something to them.

They have their personalities - some, not all, cats are aloof.

Clearly an Over Stressed animal.

My experience has always been that the Orange Tabby is the mellowest of the bunch. Don't knwo why, but my last one was wonderful even with babies tugging on his ears.

...but she's perfectly happy to sleep on my lap for hours and she sleeps on my legs all night when the weather is cold.
She likes to lick my head, too.
The older cat (who's 18--equivalent to 88 human years) will tolerate being held and likes attention, but pet him too long and you're going to get bitten.
In the evening, my wife and I sit on the sofa, she watches TV while I read, and both cats sit with us.

The blissful counterstroke-a considerable new message.

One of our cats comes on me when I'm on the couch and lies on my chest, nudges me on my chin with her head. I don't feed or take care of the cats.
One of our cats lies on the couch behind my head, and then on our bed within minutes of us retiring for the night. I don't feed or take care of the cats.
In general, apart from security, I'll take a cat any day.
