I have lived through film and digital cameras for a while. My favorite film camera was the Canon AE1 P...what an awesome camera. I now have a nice full frame Canon 6D digital camera.

I am ready for the next upgrade. Been looking at mirrorless but my heart goes back the digital, especially since I have nice lenses. With mirrorless I would have to use an adapter for each lens.

The Canon Mark 5 series looks good, but they say that's the last of the digital full frame digital from Canon. The Canon R 6 mirrorless looks like a good contender to the DSLR 5 series.

Anyone make the jump from DSLR to mirrorless? What are your thoughts?

Quite a question. I had Nikon lens when my wife was looking to upgrade cameras for video. We ended up with Panasonic GH2s and later GH4s for two reasons, 1) the Nikon lenses could work but not fully and 2) the Panasonics had better video and could record until you ran out of space vs Nikon's 20 minute limit.

None of that helps you, I found a review of the R5 and 5D which should be similar to the 6D question. These folks claimed that the 5D lenses worked actually better with the adapter in the R5; however, the R5 lens were another step better.

There were also many advantages for the mirrorless for instant viewing of changes depth of field or exposures that was quite sleek.

What confuses me is all the versions Canon has. I expected the R5 to be less than an R6 or an R7 or an R10. It seems that the R5 is the best or has the biggest sensor. Weird.

I owned Canon since the 80s.......I bought the TLb at a military base for 151.50$ I used it for years and loved the FD mount lenses. These were the full aperture metering version of the FL lenses.

Later? I bought the A1 which was the top of the 'A' series with all automation. I even bought the motor drive / nicad pack. I loved the 50mm f1.4 and later bought a 135mm f2.8 at a 'hock' shop.
I made a mistake with the 24 or 28 of f2.8 which was just a marginal lens.

I never bought the F1 which was aspirational. I DID end up with the EOS 1n and swapped up to the new lens mount. And finally? I went Digital with the EOS 1d mk2 of 8 meg. It had double memory slots, and was a very capable shooter. I did many weddings with that rig. But I hated the Tamron 35-105 f2.8 and SHOULD have bought the optically superior Sigma which only went to 70

I ended up with a heavy load. And I just started OVER. Sold the body, charger, 3 batteries and I think 5 lenses, including a 100-400 L lens. and a real nice Tamron 90mm Macro.....

I bought a APS C size Sony Mirrorless. I hated that camera after a while and ended up just about giving it away.

Ultimate choice? Nikon Z series Mirrorless. Too many good points to list. From the Matrix metering.....best standard meter I ever used....to 5 frames a second with full focus between....and faster. I even assigned a button to stop down for depth of field check.
Lenses are $$ but in line with current costs. The 70-200 is stellar. I use the FTZ adapter with the inexpensvie 85mm f1.8 'G' lens.

Now? What are your goals? What would something ELSE do that your 6d doesn't? What do you do? Weddings? Sports? Street? Event?

I won't go back to DSLR. Don't forget, that ALL new Canon glass will be for the Mirrorless....no more EOS new coming. And maybe the same for Nikon. I'd LIKE the new Z mount Macro 105.
But I don't care any more. The high spot for me is a 3-lens setup. I can carry it, and do anything I wish.

Mirrorless IS Digital......Skip the adapter. How many lenses DO you have and how many do you regularly use? I DO use the adapter but it stays on ONE lens.

I NEVER could have got this shot with my SONY. This is with the 85mm and part of a sequence.

I'm sorry Rod, but I hate all those talking head vids.

this is that husband and wife team......I'm bad with names.

But MY main problem? Why don't any of these guys use the strap?

Evaluate your needs. And for ME? On a budget, I'd bias my purchase to better glass rather than

'More Megapixels'....

Want to drive yourself completely NUTS? I just saw the release of the Z9 which has got to bust any budget....
Body only over 5000$

I really feel bad for 'real' photography. Year over year sales have dropped for over 10 years in a row.

Cell Phones have taken over.....

And to think, at one point I was at the LA Zoo. Walking around in a SUIT was an Asian man who was carrying what was even THAN a classic Rangefinder Nikon kit. This would have been a copy of a Leica of the era. Camera, bag, and 3 lenses are certainly very collectible......

I know this is not a canon, but once you get a look at THIS?
I like this better than Any of the Canon Mirrorless......but the COST will melt your credit card.

The review is from DPREVIEW which is a very good site as such things go.

Personally? I wouldn't want to tote this around for a day at the Zoo or a scenic hike.

But for a wedding? Or pro sports shooter? Maybe.

That's quite a beast.

I got real familiar with technical video and photo shooting in the 90s when I was working for a military organization in Germany. We had Kodak professional instructors sent over to give us master class classroom training to use at the time Kodak DCS 460 with Nikon backs. These were premiere digital cameras at the time and had the highest resolution and storage. 35k at the time, and the military ate the bill

This started my own journey to digital and I went through the Canon EOS series.

I don't consider myself a pro, but a very good pro-Consumer. I like to take photos of cars at cars and coffee, car shows, nature, and planes with my 600mm lens.

I like the 6D, but I think I have pushed it passed it's limits, especially it's focal points, only 11 point autofocus. I always thought the focal points were a detriment to this camera. It is fairly light and lens swaps are easy.

That Z9 is a beast and of course a full frame mirrorless. I am willing to splurge for a great camera body, but since the digital generation, it's all about specs. I am going to Ace photo this weekend with my 6D body, might be costly.

Also, I don't want to start over with Nikons since I started down the Canon path years ago.

The Sony's autofocus wins hands down. Both take great pics.

I think it was 2010, our daughter was in 6th grade, we took a family vacation and toured The Breakers guilded age mansion in Newport, RI.

She was using a '70s Canon Canonette I had given her (fixed 40mm lens rangefinder w/ internal meter) to take some chromes out in the garden (our county fair photography competition still had a slides category). I was a distance away, and saw that there were four Japanese tourists - in suits, carrying large digital cameras - watching her and pointing and talking excitedly. They were unobtrusive and kept a respectful distance, but it was kind of funny that they were all atwitter about a little American girl with an old Japanese film camera.

Back for a bit again. Ignore me if you like.

It depends on what your needs are and your habits. IMHO the best camera is the one that you carry with you ALL the time:

- Smart phone. In my case the iPhone

Like a concealed carry pistol the next best is the one you don't mind carrying [does you no good if you don't have it on you]:

- In my case, a compact mirrorless micro-four thirds Olympus with one lens ready to go at all times 12-100mm f4.0. The whole setup is very compact compared to other formats. I have a few Olympus lenses but unless my intention is to capture specific shots this one lens covers most of the scenarios as a 35mm 24-200mm equiv... and very compact. The combo includes in-body and in-lens image stabilization that works great even at very low shutter speeds.

But my iPhone is with me ALL the time usually in my front pocket ;-)

The 1st at 30MP; the other at 50. Either one will give you noticeably finer detail over the 20MP you now have.

The IV is a bullet-proof all-arounder that I have been using for years. Batteries last for many shots; not having to power up two screens.

The mirrorless types are newer with improved features, but comparing image qualities leaves me wondering where the deal is. I'm staying with my IV for awhile longer. I feel no urge to jump on the bandwagon.

If was to trade in and up, the R5 is the favorite candidate, but useable detail differences (45MP vs 30MP) aren't enough to swing the deal. Also, today'd mirrorless are half movie cameras. I'm not interested in paying half of the fee for that.

Now is the time to shop leftover IV's and SR's. You could keep either for a lifetime; they are that solid. Used EF lenses are plentiful.

Edit: the big three makers are about to spring loose with ~100MP models. Those will change the argument.

I'm not sure what you're asking, cropping or what.

Just for grins, I cropped the image below from 4K to about a 2K portion. It surely shows more detail; however, the Asylum code resizes images over 1,000 pixels in height or width and resizes them to a maximum of 1,000 for the largest dimension.

Some of the new glass is pretty good. But since we are 'up against the wall of physics', the improvements are NOT gigantic, but rather incremental. Use of all sorts of technological glass and plastic wonders as well as advanced coatings help a LOT. Not the least of it is In-Camera processing. I no longer am concerted with most distoriton.....the major types being pincushion and barrel. JPGs come out straight and my RAW images I can correct in DxO Photolab.

I don't like the new mirrorless 70-200 from Canon since it is an AirPumper. Compact and very light for its type AND terrific performance. Just that zoom moves air in and out. I had the 100-400 which I was VERY lucky with. It was also an AirPumper but stayed very clean inside.

ONE advance you may take advantage of? The new XQD or CFExpress memory is very fast. And permits very high video frame rates. 4k at 120FPS is not out of the question. The entire sensor can be used as a 'focusing point'......Even my Z6 has 273 points. And plenty of flexibility in assignment.

Just my opinion, but while you have an EXCELLENT background, the only deal breaker I see is that 600 which is not yet in the Z mount system. I'm not sure about roadmap of either the Canon OR Nikon mirrorless. You might be waiting a while for such a lens. THAT would be where I'd concentrate on the adapter. The rest? You'd have to parse thru what you DO and do NOT use and how much. I can go to a car show.....Maybe Cruising Grand tonight out in Escondido and use either JUST the 85 or the 24-70. This from the SanDiego auto show a couple years back....

Just CONSIDER a change. Some of the mirrorless improvements may catch your interest. I KNOW it is a lot of $$ but look at it as trying to find an end-game move. That's what I thought I was doing when I went SONY but was VERY far off base. The new ones are MUCH better.

Maybe.....or maybe NOT.

1. How large do you take your prints and how much cropping?
2. Do you have GLASS capable of extracting the best out of a 50mp sensor?

Printing @300dpi kind of takes the 'fun' out of huge sensors......

Mirrorless has a few interesting features, to be sure.

Can your whatever do THIS at night?

Sony KILLED with autofocus. Others, including my Nikon are making great strides. It is a very competitive area.

My Z6, for example, is on firmware 3.4 or whatever. Each version has improved on the original.
Now? My system will grab and eye.....even an Animal..... Version 1.1 or whatever of the firmeare was not anywhere NEAR that level.
I'd expect to use this feature at weddings and 'events' as well as some sports events.
The 'A' series from SONY is the goal of some photographers. Me? I had myh fill of SONY long ago and was none too pleased with the menu system. Very 'unfriendly' while my Nikon has an 'I' button on back which gets me to 10 useful controls....instantly.
I can also do 3 (THREE) user presets.....So I can configure for special usage. I don't know the limits of what these presets can remember......Maybe I'll experiment. I'd like ONE preset for action stuff.....And another for aperture priority with a few additions......

The 5DSR and R5 do seem like some pretty good candidates. Going to the candy, err, camera store tomorrow with 6D and my 24-70. Thank you for the tips.

@pictureguy,

Which camera took that photo? Nice job. I have to try and locate one of my glowing tubes, cartridge, or car pics I did. Once I do, I will make a new post as a follow-up since this post is getting buried by newer posts.

How do you like Lightroom compared to Photoshop?

Nikon Z6......'only' about 25meg.
And using the expensive but reasonable 'kit' lens of 24-70 f4, at the wide end.
Exceptional low-light performance. Video is terrific. And is NOT cropped in-camera if I shoot 4k.

Not lightroom. I'm using DxO Photolab these days.....I can't turn the corner on the Adobe subscription model. 'the gift that keeps on giving'.....Also? Adobe has always been real tight with upgrades. So to get additional camera RAW support, you might need an entire new version.

The Canonette was a good camera. Simple, but functional and certainly not too much for a 6th grader.
When I was in 6th? I think I had an Argus c3.....'The Brick', in part for its boxy shape and in part for its durability...

And that it was still working maybe 30 years on? Good camera. some of the newer all-electronic stuff is shot at about 10,000 exposures.......

This line is what put Canon 'on the map', in a sense. They must have made 20 different takes on this name over a 20 year span.....give or take.

I owned the TLb basic SLR in about 75 or so.....500th top shutter speed! But the internal match-needle meter was wonderful to use and I learned to over / under expose 'on the fly' as conditions demanded. The upline FTb was aspirational while the F1 (first model) was 'unobtanium'......
