The 1958 Ford was an unsuccessful facelift on the '57 shell, and Mercuries looked like something that might eat your kids.
But the '58 Mopars looked good. They didn't last very long but they looked good.
If I ever walked into my garage and found something like this...

1971

The infamous year that the Ford Pinto and Chevy Vega were introduced. The Vega was named Car of the Year by Motor Trend and Car and Driver.

When I was a kid, my older brother had a Pinto and my mom had a Vega. Even back then, I didn't like riding in them, they were so shitty. She was t-boned at a 4-way stop by an uninsured drunk driver in that Vega. It was so destroyed she had to be cut out of it and she was in a coma for the next two weeks.

Supposedly, the best selling car that year was the Chrysler New Yorker, a big old boat with the longest hood and trunk I think I've ever seen. A relative had one. I think it got about 8 MPG. But I would have guessed the Beetle. My early childhood memories include seeing lots of rusting Beetles that their owners couldn't keep running right.

Even muscle cars were bad that year. Third generation Vette's were ugly cars with their bulbous swoopy lines and terrible fit & finish. Pontiac had beaten the GTO with an ugly stick the previous year. Ford did the same to the Mustang in 1971. The Plymouth 'Cuda was a little better looking, but the styling was still 70s-ified.

By modern standards they were junk but by the standards of 1971, they were far from the worst. The 2-liter engine made good power, there was rack and pinion steering, slick-shifting 4-speed manual, front disc brakes...the VW Bug was far worse than the Pinto. So was the Vega.
And really, so were Camaros and Mustangs. The '71 Mustang was a bloated caricature of a pony car, still using the same suspension and steering designed for the Edsel Comet (yeah, the Comet was originally going to be a small Edsel). Camaros and Firebirds had a really weak structure, part unitized, part body-on-frame. Felt like there was a hinge at the base of the cowl.
I had a '71 Pinto hatchback with a 4-on-the-floor and the 2-liter engine and I loved that car.
Pintos rusted out but not as fast as Datsuns and Mazdas. Or Vegas.
But if you wanted a really sweet car built in 1971, there was this:

1971 Opel Manta. Buick dealers sold them. Now if you were three years younger, you'd have been SOL. The '74 Manta not only was uglified with battering ram bumpers, the price skyrocketed because of the value of the dollar against the Deutschmark.

Great car but it dissolved like Alka-Seltzer in the Northeast. IIRC, he had to have the quarterpanels rebuilt after only two winters. The Mantas held up much better, though they weren't nearly as fast.
And the 240z was damned near impossible to get. The demand was so high, dealers were marking them up like crazy.

1956, it would be a Cadillac Coup De Ville or runner up, Buick Century
or Chevrolet Belair, all fully optioned with A/C.

I would have said Corvette, but A/C was not available in a Corvette in 56 and that is a must down here in Fl.

We had a 55 Chevrolet 210 when I was little, had V8, power glide and factory A/C. Was Canyon Coral and Artic White.

And I think it would be pretty useless in the snow and ice anyway. I have it rust-proofed every fall and store it in the winter. It has a stainless steel header and ANSA exhaust system, so there isn't much to rust.

I'm no expert either ... I do have a vague memory [amongst a growing number of many] of an exhaust through tail light mod that maybe was done on other cars too? apparently it had quite the 'enduro' reputation ... interesting. the bubble top is a deal breaker for me though

that car carries the sad epitaph: "Unfortunately, Gardner's wife never liked the car and later convinced him to get rid of it" where no doubt 'convinced' = 'nagged'. I hope that he started another project right away, just because!

The authorities didn't use anywhere near as much salt then as they do today, and they didn't use brine, which is far worse and is now SOP.
I don't know that my friend's brother had the car rustproofed but he never spared any expense, so it probably had Ziebart. FWIW, my '71 Pinto had Ziebart also, but that didn't stop the front fenders from rotting out. Surface rust would destroy the doors, quarters, and rockers.
I know that Karl, the Z owner in question, also had a 1969 SS396 (banana yellow with a Muncie 4-speed) and it held up much better than the Z did. Outlasted it in fact. Was finally totaled in 1977, by which time the Z has rotted through the second set of rockers and quarter panels, had been replaced by a VW Scirocco. In fact, even my old Pinto outlasted the Z. My brother was driving it in 1977. I had moved on to a truly awful Chevy Caprice.
You certainly did something right, keeping your Datsun in one piece.

Ziebart used to be the go-to rust-proofing company, but it fell behind the competition because in many cases it made rust worse. The Ziebart compound would eventually harden and crack, causing water and dissolved salt to wick up and settle in between the metal and the Ziebart compound. It would then be free to rust without being seen until it was too late. My guy uses a waxy 'no-drip' compound that seeps into the nooks and crannies, and never dries out. He swears by it, and I can't fault the results.

His was a regular coupe not a hatch. Not Ziebarted either. The holes in the quarter panels were almost big enough to shove a sheep through.
Mine held up much better, probably because of the Ziebart, but the extreme tuck-under of the body sides that was in fashion then meant lots of stone chips on the doors, rockers, quarters. Fighting surface rust in those areas was a constant battle.
Road crews back then, in the Pittsburgh area at least, only had rock salt on hand and didn't use it when the temps dropped below 20 degrees. They'd switch to ash, which caused different problems than salt.
The ash--and road dirt in general--built up inside of frame rails and along the lips around wheel openings. If you didn't hose that stuff out, and nobody ever did, it would kill the car just as sure as salt would.

The biggest fault with the 240Z design was their factory undercoating. It was very porous and absorbent. It would suck up water and salt and hold onto it. The best thing to do was to scrape as much off as you could, then apply tar or some other petroleum compound that rejects water.

My buddy's father was in charge of quality control at the nearby Ford plant where they built Mavericks, Pintos, and eventually Crown Victorias. He owned a full-sized Galaxy or something like that (sorry, but I don't know much about American cars), and one day he pulled on the door handle and the whole mechanism came away, leaving a huge rust hole where the handle should have been. Needless to say, he was furious.

Lots of OK choices from my birth year.
But I don't want ANYTHING with portholes. My automotive values are such that I can't see myself in ANY of that iron. I drove a '56 Chrysler Windsor for a couple years. What a barge. Kind of liked my '73 Super Beetle better for a number of reasons....not the least of which was ease of parking, lower running costs and comfott for JUST TWO.......
If Limited to 'cars up to your 20th birthday? choices open up a lot and than it gets into collectible territory. Maybe an Impala SS427 Convertible 4-spd?

But if limited to something I had to DRIVE EVERY DAY and could only own ONE CAR? Balance changes and maybe go for the 'practical' end of the spectrum......I'd like to SEE a good condition '66 Plymouth Satellite with 383 2bbl and auto trans. Don't want a 'resto-mod' that CAME with a 318 and now has a 440 or hemi. Not interested in 'speed' but want a turnkey runner.
Too much is never enough

The guy doesn't bring it out often, but I've seen it a few times. Even more impressive than in pictures. And it makes the most wonderful sound.

Avanti was ahead of it's time with the AMC Javelin being the heir apparent conceptually

very similar lines and specs ... better looking though, a less 'euro' mug

Don't know if you were born with it or acquired it over (a fair amount) of time.

But you have it, and it IS appreciated!

There were 100 chassis available between the D-Type and the XKSS. There's a mint '57 in BRG floating around, valued at $12,000,000.

A total of 25 XKSS were planned but 9 got destroyed in a factory fire while being built leaving 16 in existence.

my S2000 outperforms it in every way.

I admit I don't like the styling of anything from the "big three" in the 1970s, especially the interiors. Nor the handling and suspension.

I like the looks! Had no idea that cars in 1959 could look nice. I was thinking more along the lines of some American land yachts, but that huge red Cadillac that RodM chose wasn't so bad.

Of the smaller cars that I recall from my youth, I liked the Triumph TR6, 1970's Fiat Spiders, MG Midget, etc. Probably not so reliable but cool. Of course those were 1970-ish cars, not 1959.

As I mentioned to ghost, when I think of 1950's cars I always have large American land yachts in mind. That Ferrari looks pretty modern to me even by today's standards. Sweet !!

How much OIL does your S-2000 use? I should NEVER have bought one with more than 2 miles on the clock. I suspect 'test drives' went to redline every time which is NOT good for a new engine....of such capacity.
Mine used a qt in about 1200 to 1500 miles. IMO? Too Much......

And worth only what someone will PAY FOR IT....which in my case? 500$ cash, a case of Coors and tickets to Wrestlemania....

I'd rather hae a BRG Miata from one of the few years they produced 'em in that color.....At least I could drive it......

mine uses none between yearly changes at just under 110k miles.

I purchased mine new and saw it come off the truck. Same said for an '06 ST1300 motorcycle with a similar redline for its four cylinder motor.

I would NEVER purchase any vehcicle again, of the High Performance ilk, with more than 3 or 4 miles on it.. Even than?
I'd rather see it come off the car carrier. Good idea.......
