President Biden announced Wednesday his plan to withdraw troops from Afghanistan in September, the latest move to pull the military out of what has become America's longest war. The Onion looks at key dates from the U.S. war in Afghanistan.

1982: CIA funds and trains Taliban after making them promise not to do anything bad.

2001: World Trade Center office worker spills coffee on shirt and declares day couldn't possibly get any worse.

2003: Loosest-ever use of the word "accomplished."

2008: Surviving Afghan wedding guests admittedly somewhat grateful for drone strike that interrupted interminable best man speech.

2010: Occupying U.S. troops increased to 100,000 as part of Operation Nice Round Numbers.

2011: Osama bin Laden killed in Pakistan raid, forcing U.S. to stay in Afghanistan to gather intelligence on his ghost.

2012: Vice President Biden announces that forces will leave Afghanistan after he's elected to replace Donald Trump as president in eight years.

2014: President Obama announces combat missions are officially over and any further civilian deaths can be ignored.

2020: After months of negotiations, U.S. and Taliban agree to let bygones be bygones.

2036: President Buttigieg promises to withdraw remaining 80,000 US troops from Afghanistan by end of year.

An Afghan vet. Said he went to Afghanistan so his kid wouldn't have to, but his kid did a tour, too. Ridiculous.
The number of editorials in the Washington Post blasting withdrawal are pretty damned ridiculous too.

When it became clear that there wouldn't be a draft she forgot all about the war for the next twenty years.

110% behind the invasion of Iraq. "'Bout time we kicked someone's ass!"
But on the other hand, "They better not expect MY kids to go!"
I honestly don't know what Paul Wolfowitz and the rest of those geniuses were smoking at the time. Even a casual glance at history would have shown that the effort was doomed.
Twenty years for what? You can't really say that the lives sacrificed, both ours and Afghani, made any difference whatsoever. Didn't make us any more free, after all one of the key results of 9/11 was 24/7 surveillance of all Americans by the NSA. Warantless searches by the FBI.
Every time those sanctimonious gas bags at the NFL stretch a flag across a football field in "support of the troops," my teeth grind. If you support them, bring them the fuck home.

Kind of reminds of another failed war we got into back in the 1960's.

In August of 2016, my nephew was brought home, and laid to rest.

Biden has been riding Trump's coattails regarding Afghanistan, just like he is regarding the Coronavirus vaccines.

People all over the world, they're not Americans just struggling to get out of their Asian or Arab skin.
Afghanistan and Vietnam (and just about everywhere else), they're a lot older than us. Let them do things their own way.

"Let them do things their own way."

Amen.

The U.S. and allies had good reason to go into Iraq and Afghanistan initially, but completely lost sight of the point and became totally sidetracked into "nation building". Saddam Hussein invaded our friend Kuwait, so we kicked his ass out. Good. The Taliban tried to take over Afghanistan and was a source of terrorists. Good riddance. (Except that they're still there.)

But twenty years of fighting what amounts to street gangs in Chicago? That's just a losing strategy, from a national military perspective. Let them duke it out amongst themselves.

I say, all y'all can fight amongst yourselves, just don't export it to us, because then, we're going to kick your ass again, and, hopefully, we'll have someone like Trump who will be serious about getting the job done, unlike Bush and Obama, who wanted to play nicey-nice while "fighting" a war.

Now, we've got Biden who wants to play nicey-nice with Iran and China. Eye-yie-yie. He seriously doesn't get it.

The Mideast has been at war with itself for at least a couple thousand years. You'd think that, someday, they'd figure it out. It's not our problem.

I guess maybe Afghanistan wasn't as Uber FUBAR as we were led to believe, only FUBAR.

In the meantime, the money keeps flowing into the same pockets.

On yet another blatantly political posting, while you stand back in complete shock when you see someone else do it. Well done. Now I truly know the meaning of 'hypocrisy'.

They just want to be able to exploit the rare earth mineral deposits that are in Afghanistan. The Soviets did a resource survey when they were there and found lots of iron, copper, and gold. The US confirmed the finds that include an estimated 1.4 million tons of rare earth minerals currently worth more than $1 Trillion dollars. While not necessarily a rare earth mineral, Afghanistan is considered to be the Saudi Arabia of lithium. If China really wants to dominate the electric car market, they'll need that convenient supply of lithium. There are also natural gas and petroleum deposits.

"The importance of REEs to the global economy cannot be overstated. They are essential to the manufacture of a host of modern technologies, including cell phones, televisions, hybrid engines, computer components, lasers, batteries, fiber optics, and superconductors. Congressional findings have called rare earth elements critical to national security, and understandably so. REEs are key to the production of tank navigation systems, missile guidance systems, fighter jet engines, missile defense components, satellites, and military grade communications gear."

So don't be surprised if the Chinese will be ready to move in when the US is just closing the door behind themselves. China and Afghanistan share 47 miles of border. If there's a road there somewhere, it won't take long to see it paved over and improved.

The Taliban never fought the Russians. They were created by Pakistan's ISI in the 90s to implant a more Pakistani aligned government in Kabul.
Very common misunderstanding.

Goober I think you may be incorrect on that. What I remember is that the Taliban were willing to give him up to another Mideast country and or they needed a good reason based on Islamic Law. Something along those lines. I don't remember them requiring rightful government status. Anyhow, they were no fans of OBL, I can tell you that!

US refuses to turn over evidence implicating OBL and attacks Afghanistan instead

or

US refuses to negotiate choosing to attack instead

---------------------------------------------------------

The problem is the US had no evidence that Afghanistan or the Taliban had anything to do with the 911 attacks. Strangely though the Saudi Royal Family had been tied directly to Al-Qaeda. It's a big family btw.
