 In the UK there is an interesting crowd funded electric bike conversion kit. Should be available from May. For those on the wating list price is only £500 which seems pretty reasonable.

What do people think of? Videos on site are worth watching.

 Prices may have gone up since then but if I recall, I could have done a similar conversion to my bike for as little as $300USD.
The better mid-drive conversion would have been between $800-$1,000USD.
Mid-drive--in which the motor is mounted either in or on the bottom bracket--is supposed to be the better system. You pedal to generate power for the motor which in turn drives the rear wheel.

 After seeing reference to ebikes here, I immediately started noticing them around town. You can buy one new for around $1500. I'm sure those are no good in the eyes of some elitists.

 a few years back,

Claimed she doesn't contribute enough to get the bike back to his neighborhood from Ocean Beach in San Francisco, a climb of just a couple hundred feet over three miles. :-)
