Bought a can of Gillette Shave Cream...for sensitive skin. At about 1.5$, it is a bargain since after my test this evening, I found you use Very Little. It'll last quite a while.
I was using a 6 or 7 usage Derby Extra blade, too. This is a good 2nd sting blade. I will try again with either a Gillette Silver Blue (Russian made?) or a Japanese FEATHER blade.

'Botique' soap, found at swap meets and such is NOT good for shaving. Better is stuff you find a LUSH, a mall brand where you can get shaving soaps OR creams.

I may end up experimenting with soap making. I think the control of using REAL olive oil (Castile) and additional oils and maybe even some ground oatmeal, may make it worth a test.

My face breaks out with major razor burn. Doesn't matter what kind of shaving cream either, from foams to gels, they all make me look like a teenager with an acne problem.
But I don't use expensive boutique soaps or lathers either, just plain old Ivory soap. The cheapest stuff.
99 and 44/100% pure. It floats.

I have been using Creemo for about a year and am a big fan. As advertised, a little dab goes a long way. Clean shave and no abrasion.

Try a different RAZOR. Your current model might have TOO AGGRESSIVE a setting. I personally would NOT yet be blaming the soap / gel / cream.

The Rockwell 6S for 100$ is a possible, but too expensive. It is Stainless Steel The Feather model is even MORE expensive but finished like a fine watch. For 185$, it better be!

Some other models can be had with different levels of 'aggression' which can be bought to match your needs. The basis is 'blade exposure' and is a designed in feature of the head.

Next is to buy a Premium Blade. No bargain blades. When I bought my DE Shaver from Maggard, I also bought 5 different blades. The Gillette Super Blue and Feather are the BEST. Astra, Derby and Shark were the Also Rans in this testing.

samey-same.
Currently, I'm using one of those Gillette things with more blades than the Red Baron's plane had wings. It works and the blades last a long time.
Never any rash with Ivory soap.

I have been using cordless electric shavers all my life except for when they weren't cordless. I keep a few cheap disposable blades around in case I let things get out of hand or miss a spot. Electric shavers are blood free and less irritating.

RE: Shaving Experiment, posted on March 7, 2021 at 12:20:28
The shaving cream industrial complex wants you to believe that you need them. Here's the dirty little secret: You don't.

Over the past 20+ years, I haven't spent a dime on shaving cream. This has freed up thousands of dollars to spend on other stuff.

Oh, sure, back in the old days, with a single-blade razor, I used shaving cream. Then, I got an electric razor. No mas shaving cream, but my skin would get irritated, and have red spots which were unsightly to girls. Since I was newly married, that was ok.

When that electric razor company (Remington) died, I bought a blade razor again - a Gillette Mach 3. No shaving cream. Shower, shave. Done. It takes some time for the skin to become accustomed to it, but it will. It's like getting a tan or a callous.

:)

I NEVER used an electric razor! Always a blade. Sometimes a safety razor, but most of the time a cartridge type razor. I tried the various shaving clubs and premium shave shop products until I found Dollar Shave Club... I can't recommend their products enough! Their 4 blade cartridges stay sharp for a LONG time, they'll even send you a free handle if you wear yours out! The blades are relatively inexpensive (4 cartridges for $7.00 for the 4 blade OR the 2 blade cartridges are $4.00 for 5)! Their Shave Butter is the best that I have used and the Amber and Lavender range of products smell divine! For me they beat almost everything else that is out there to be had. However, I do like as well Woody's for Men line of shave and fragrance products and I will occasionally indulge in a tub of English shave cream from Taylor's Of Old Bond Street but neither of those options are as inexpensive as DSC. Try them out! I can almost guarantee you will love it!

I nick myself maybe every 10th shave or less. No big deal. And mainly if I try to use a blade TOO MANY TIMES. A new / sharp blade is not a problem.

As for irritation? If you want the ultimate close shave, use a real blade. I had several electrics in years past and even the well regarded Norelco didn't get the job done.

I have reached my current point thru extensive experiments.

Most shaving soap is just .......soap......Nothing special. While the boutique 'soapers' are making weird claims and adding funny colors and scents, it IS just soap.
Liquid soap uses Potasium Hydroxide while solid or 'bar' soap uses Sodium Hydroxide...
Add colorants and aroma oils to taste. a MILLION recipes online for stovetop soap!

My cost per shave for the Gillette Shaving Cream is maybe 2 cents per shave. I'm estimateing 70 shaves per can, which I think is a LOW NUMBER.

Thousands of Dollars freed up? At 50 shaves per dollar, 1000$ is 50,000 shaves or daily for over a century. I think I can afford THAT.....I doubt buying a can of shaving cream is the difference between my drivng a Wreck or that Mercedes i have my eyes on.
Even at 10 shaves per dollar? 10,000 shaves is what? 27 Yerars? If you skip Sunday? Extends it to about 32 years....

At the link is an admittedly more than average cost electric by Norelco. But for the 100$ ask? I could get you a terrific DE shaver, soap, brush and a 10 year supply of the BEST Stainless blade available. the Feather. japanese made and worth the premium...
I think you can handle getting your OWN mirror!
And you will replace the Norelco well before the DE razor needs to be replaced. The Feather blade for 0.44$ each and lasting 10 shaves, the cost per shave is VERY low.

I think you can get the cost per shave to 0.10$ per shave without much effort.

Glad you are in 'happy place'.
I once was a fan of the Gillette Sensor. Great Shave but the HANDLE wore out. Junk.

You can get a 'classic era' Gillette as a restored item for WAY too much money!
See link so you don't think I'm making this stuff up!

If I did anything new? I'd send off for either the Feather or the Rockwell DE shaver. But I'm fine with my current Maggard Stainless handle and 'regular' head. No Muss, no Fuss......

I just need a decent shave daily.

I used to buy Barbasol at Target but it was getting harder to find, the can size got smaller, and the price kept going up.

I found 11-oz cans of regular ole Gillette Foamy in a 12-pack on Amazon. It was cheap but I don't recall the price. Each can seems to last me 2 months so I'm stocked up on shave cream for nearly 2 years. I hate the gel stuff so I always use the white foam.

I get my razors delivered from Harry's so I'm all set.

A sharp blade gets a closer shave than my Norelco. No argument with that. By lunch time, it's all about the same. If I'm going out at night (if I ever do that again) I shave again.

2 parts of the 'probem'.....but it's not really a problem, just a concern

First and most important? Good shave? Smooth? Easy? I have to support whatever works for YOU.

Second? Cost per shave. You could go to a specialist Tonsorial parlor. We had a 'the Art Of Shaving' in a mall near here who employed a specialist who used a straight razor. He was 3rd generation and a perfectionist. Once a week with this guy PLUS tips would run into the Hundreds per year.

I'm just not a 'fan' of those multi-blade stacks. Where is the limit? 2? 5? 9? Where does it end? My long-gone Gillette Sensor was pretty good but CHEAP handle an $$$ blades.

the 'white foam' from Gillette is cheap and my ONE test yesterday was very positive. I'll give it another go with a New Blade in the razor. I just looked at the ingredients and didn't see anything special. Indeed, some seem familiar from other soaps.

I really became a fan of DE after years of disposibles and 'other'. But of course, YMMV

I'm past that point AND because i no longer work, don't need 'the perfect shave' each morning.

this cuts down the hassle factor, gives me time to heel and keeps down shaving costs.....

Hahahahaha! LOL

"It's like getting a tan or a callous."

Let's review: "It's LIKE getting a tan or a callous".

:)

The skin gets used to it and adapts.

I shave right after I shower every coupla weeks, and the whiskers and skin are fine with it. NO SHAVING CREAM!

Shaving every day was too irritating.

the same as giving yourself a mini-facelift every day... That to me made sense as you're essentially peeling off the top layer of skin daily... I'm convinced that kept my youthful appearance at bay for a really long time... Of course now I'm too lazy to do it every day and have fallen into 2-3 times a week at the most. I actually hate the feeling of stubble, as it itches and pokes me like needles when I try to sleep...
