Anyone else get to shop at a place that offers a free turkey if you spend a certain amount?

I'll be eating a lot of turkey soup. :)

turkey and noodles here, not really soup

and since we got turkey so cheap, we have one in the freezer for Christmas too

yeah, not sure your neck of the woods but it is $0.50 cents a pound here.

Got a 20 pounder in the freezer.

They're bought up as soon as they hit the freezer section. I guess with no big family gatherings, nobody wants lots of leftovers.

Except my wife. We will have lots of leftovers here. Twice.

After turning over a lot of frozen turkeys at my local K-roger, I managed to find a 14 pounder. The rest were well north of that size.

I like to cook them on my Weber kettle and 14-15 pounds is at the upper limit of what will fit under the lid.

I'm making a turkey breast for Thanksgiving.

The soup is good, there's lots of instructions on youtube if you haven't had that before. I wound up buying lots of vegetable bullion cubes and am going to make it with turnips, carrots, parsnip, and parsley. Little bit of salt and pepper too.

Nice find.

We use an old-school Hamilton-Beach countertop roaster; my wife has it down to a science, always get a good, moist bird. And it frees up the oven for pies.

We gave up on charcoal when my dad's ancient Weber kettle rusted out at a leg junction. Have a Weber natural gas grill, no bottles, no dealing with spent coals, love it.

I would have been perfectly fine with frozen pizza.

I'm with you ... all that prep & clean up for 15 minutes of chow time?

when there's football & beer that must be taken care of!

ridiculous ... unless you're out visiting of course

I don't hold with big traditional holidays--Thanksgiving, xmas, New Years, Memorial Day, Independence Day. There's always this pressure to do something "in the spirit."
Covid-19 is a convenient excuse to skip all that crap.

are simply juvenile chickens; not a special 'small' exotic breed or anything

just roast a cheaper price per pound full size bird and be done with it. or better yet, cut it up and fry it .

The idea that producers would offer up smaller birds for the pandemic was hatched by J-School geniuses who think that birds somehow roll out of hens already bagged and frozen.

Now that you mention it, they do act pretty juvenile., posted on November 24, 2020 at 12:24:43

The two of them together in the package, one of them keeps whining about how the other keeps touching her.
Anyway, 'taint my choice. She Who Must Be Obeyed chooses the menu here. I took over the cooking duties when I retired but I cook fancy and she doesn't like fancy.

I like it. Do they have a dehydrated version for the chipmunks?

I have no doubt the birds were raised as usual, it's the consumer behavior that's mildly amusing

Now that thanksgiving is canceled, avoiding the wrath of "she who must be obeyed", she has decided we should make Gumbo since it uses all the veggies and broth we got to make the stuffing.

Actually I hate to admit it it's not a bad idea. Much less cooking than making that feast.

Truth be told, I'm with Ghost, I only do those things because folks expect them. Gumbo is one of those dishes that's actually better the next day so the leftovers are easier to deal with.

My daughter ordered a Bell & Evans last month at our local grocer. It came in on Sunday and she picked it up today.

They'll be plenty left over for turkey clubs on Friday ...with a heaping helping of stuffing on the side ...and pecan bars.

I'm going to be gaining some weight back.

Dean.

For years I did a turkey on the grill, and then I made stock out of the carcass and the leftovers for the express purpose of using that stock to make gumbo. The smoky flavor of the stock really compliments the flavor of the andouille in the gumbo.

Planning to rekindle that tradition this year after a multi-year hiatus. We got tired of all the work and hub-bub that went into prep of the T-giving meal and took the lazy way out by buying the pre-made Thanksgiving in a box at the supermarket.

Looking forward to some good gumbo made with that turkey stock. Hope yours turns out awesome. Good gumbo is hard to beat.

I'm heading your way. I cooked "a mess" of collards on Saturday and after all that work I really have no desire eat them Thanksgiving. That happens a lot to me after working hard on a time consuming dish. I'm done with it before serving. GUMBO sounds like a great idea and tasty too.

Will

I'm with you, Will. Between all the work of cooking and then the necessity to "taste" things as you prepare, one isn't necessarily hungry by dinner time. But, at least there's wine :-)

I can identify ... another thing I don't like is people making my b'day an excuse to party etc.

it's just not necessary and don't care to be the center of attention

Xmas gifts are a nuisance as well ... if I want or need something it gets acquired on my own initiative ... if I can't afford whatever that may be it's almost guaranteed somebody else can't afford it or wouldn't spend on it anyway ... so I tell people 'please don't spend $$ on things that you think I might like because I probably won't'

it really is the thought that counts, save your dosh for yourself because you can't get it back when you really need it

but some never outgrow that child like need to unwrap something and project that onto others, because who can imagine they're not just like you? answer: adults

I don't want gifts and don't like being the center of attention. I fought like hell to not have a retirement party at work, but they threw one anyway. All I wanted to do was clock out at the end of the day like it was any other day.

I spent a couple of hours and some dough on amazon. Wound up buying ingredients for Gumbo. Bought 40 pounds of turkey while it is cheap. I looked up turkey Gumbo.

Thanks for the idea, haven't had this stuff since I was in New Orleans for Halloween.

Oak Grove gumbo and jambalaya mixes are decent substitutes for the real thing. Mixes are to gumbo what frozen pizza is to pizza.

I was gonna email you my chicken and sausage gumbo recipe, but your email is shut down.

I ordered some and wound up getting advantage of @ amazon. They wanted 20 bucks for a 5 pack. 1 pack for 1 pound of meat. Thanks a lot I'll give it a try, it will probably be better for me to impress my family this way, and it includes all the rice so I won't be fooling around :)

I am making stock out of the carcass, the bone juice from the carcass makes for great stock/broth. Also this is very important for chicken soup.

An image of "Eeyore" in Winnie The Pooh springs to mind.

Personally, I very much enjoy celebrating significant holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Independence Day) with family and friends (not necessarily everyone all at the same time).

Aside, you can type "Thanksgiving" and "Independence Day", but it's too much work to type "Christmas"? Interesting.

'with family and friends'

the family is probably stuck with you but, just curious, what time do you have to return those 'friends' to the rental agency after the holidays?

be well,

You need a lb. of sausage and a lb. of chicken. Use boneless skinless thigh meat. Dark meat is better than white. I would also precook the chicken. A half an onion and a couple of stalks of celery chopped up in the mix and it starts getting close to the real thing.

A few years back, I offered to send you some gumbo and jambalaya mixes. You wouldn't give me you address.

You clearly have an obsession with arguing and denigrating people who disagree with you. Why can't you converse normally? What is your problem?

RE: With Family and Friends, posted on November 25, 2020 at 12:50:28
how can anyone disagree with you when you don't or won't say anything substantive when given the opportunity? it's all meant in good fun! wait, you mean you're not having fun? don't be such a humorless snowflake. don't think that I'm not appreciative of your following my posts because ... ah, never mind, you'd be right.

so anyway, the agency is pretty liberal about their return policy then?

be well,
