Notice how 'tolerance' abruptly left the lexicon?

It's corollary, non-judgmentalism too. And 'diversity' left a while ago.

All replaced by an enforced conformity.

Tolerance is a construct of socialization which has always hung by a thread.

Individual self-preservation is at the base of all human interaction and everything must be seen through that.

Don't be guilty of viewing the present as history.

It may appear rather abrupt, but it's been years in the making.

The conformity enforcers will not agree that it is intolerance, or admit that they are enforcing conformity. They will, of course, cleverly avoid answering such questions, answer with a non-answer/spin their answer, or transparently deny reality by answering with a "No". It's become so predictable. They justify their means (intolerance/judgmentalism/enforced conformity) by the ends that they seek. They know exactly what they are doing. But, people are slowly but surely catching on to their game.

hold on there ... who or what takes advantage of which culture?

I've asked Bean with no reply but you seem to 'grok' this 'subject'

wtf are you guys referring to? btw, I don't think 'sheeple' etc. is a thing

from my observations humankind evolved far past that into hunters / gatherers with all the associated tribalism it brings

if there's regressive traits brought along for the ride you might describe lemming like behavior, or bullish behavior [charge!] because bulls will also cooperate with each other repelling threats to 'the herd' ... but the forte` of sheep is avoidance while mixing in numbers to increase survival odds against threats, and they WILL tolerate other species and behaviors

... so what are the examples of this 'sheepish culture' and again, wtf are you guys talking about with this 'tolerance has left the lexicon' stuff?

c'mon, I listen to both of you, don't I rate an answer?

You are free to think that...I'm not here to sway people's beliefs, or make/convince someone to find my way of thinking correct.

7+ Billion people on the planet, I don't have the time, energy or desire to make any one of them to think like me.

There is your answer...enjoy..:-)

thought I would get more traction, but apparently not

Scenery? My wife teaches English 101/102, so I get some insight through her as to where the up-and-coming generations are coming from.

Used to be, tolerance and non-judgmentalism were the keystone of her students' logic; instilled by education and culture. Never judge anyone for their actions, always tolerate difference in whatever form it came. Now, the tables have turned. It's absolute intolerance for views outside some fairly narrow parameters, and pious, self-righteous judgment. My wife is having a terrible time teaching the current crop how to write an argumentation paper; they cannot fathom support and persuasion.

Conformity as become enforced. Differ at your own risk.

I appreciate your taking the time to reply but you've addressed an assertion I made, not the question

wtf are you guys talking about?

[incidentally, out of 7+ Billion people don't you suspect that odds are there's more than a few that think like you? hell, they could BE you and you'd never know it ... statistically speaking anyway]

now don't reply to 'incidentally' or this discourse will look like ping-pong ... wtf are you guys talking about?

RE: Notice how 'tolerance' abruptly left the lexicon?, posted on November 24, 2020 at 12:51:34
huh ... no offense intended but you didn't elucidate on why you think 'tolerance' left 'the lexicon' ... maybe point to an example? you've only just restated your original comment

of course people and society judge others for their actions ... both tolerance and intolerance arise out of judgements from value systems

'tolerate difference in whatever form it came'

lets suppose the form it comes in are behaviors / actions realized

'honor killings' are acceptable in some cultures: is that tolerable in your judgement? pogroms are policy in some societies: are you OK with this? 'caste systems' result in inequalities and are embedded in certain cultures: should these be encouraged or discouraged? in some parts of this country and 'religion' it's OK to have multiple wives, and in fact, they believe that this 'stable' of women includes 'grooming' said wives for 'duty' in their per-pubescense: does that make you want to sign up or puke?

the above are some examples of what I judge to be atrocious behavior. do you find my attitude about them to be intolerant or do your answers track anywhere close to mine? I'll answer myself. I would and do not tolerate those things ... is that a negative or am I not 'enlightened' as it were?

what have you seen that prompted your statement that tolerance has left the lexicon? there must be something or you would have left it unsaid. I don't believe it has anything to do with stories from your wife about work. what is it? maybe I can help you understand what you're seeing, maybe you can show me what I'm not seeing. give it a try, I don't want to be a dumbass about whatever it is you're on about.

regards,

I don't know what people are talking about quite often around here. They talk in riddles, and they don't answer questions. It's kind of like an inside joke, and the truth is that it's probably not worth delving into.

RE: Notice how 'tolerance' abruptly left the lexicon?, posted on November 24, 2020 at 14:23:37
What prompts me? The word 'tolerance' really was pervasive in usage. In education, community groups, cultural groups - was ubiquitous as part of the platitudes one hears or reads in these groups promoting their missions. My wife watches the local news at night, I heard it over and again. It is now largely gone.

YES, I have seen what I also consider to be atrocious behavior defended upon the basis of cultural 'tolerance'. YES, it makes me want to puke. I'm not advocating that in the least. Please.

BUT, if I come out and say I differ on any one of a number of cultural, economic, or political issues (*gasp* I said political in the Asylum), I'm a bigot, a whatever-phobe. There is NO tolerance for difference of opinion or thought - from a very narrow set of parameters. I can be shamed in media, doxed, shunned by the community, have pressure applied to my employer. If I'm in government or education, I might lose my job.

I believe 'tolerance' has been quietly set aside as there is now more to be had in intolerance.

Agree, disagree, ignore, or think I'm full of crap, as you like.

Perfect techniques for when one is trying to get around the rules of the forum! ;-)

In addition, I notice a lot of passive aggression in posts around here. Heck, I indulge in it myself sometimes! Sometimes, the aggression breaks out beyond passiveness, and that's when we get our real dust-ups! ;-)

In a way, these techniques can keep things interesting and connected to a certain discipline in one's writing, i.e., you try to get your point in, but stating your points in "riddles" can allow you to ask, "Who? Me?", when confronted. In a way, it's almost fun!

I think that the problem you're referring to is also allied to the attacks on free speech we're seeing - where those in the government who would like to restrict free speech have now got the consortium of Facebook, Twitter and Google to do their dirty work. Current thinking seems to go like, "I don't like what this person says, and I can't refute his points. So I want him censored so he can't make those points in the first place!" (IOW, no tolerance for the other view). And it's a perfect scheme, because those big tech monopolies are private companies and don't have to abide by the Constitution and Bill of Rights. So those within the government who want to restrict free speech get what they want, and nobody can fight back. All they need to do is maintain the pressure on our tech companies and they're home free!

I suggested that 'All Lives Matter'......and was rebuffed.....Severely....

I never got to my researches on Mass Movements which is NOT optimistic for any mass movement from current political parties to movements from the past.

A big difference exists between the IDEA expressed and the actuality of the various movements and organizations with BLM in the title or advertising. I'd bet 20$ that at least ONE such organization is skirting fraud with such usage.

I sent an email to this person and said that NEXT time I'd let him hit me than go get an attorney......

Ha, there's the first jab.

Ha! "No offense intended". Hahaha!!!... more of us should "elucidate". I agree.

"'honor killings' are acceptable in some cultures: is that tolerable in your judgement? pogroms are policy in some societies: are you OK with this? Now you've gone WAAAAY off-topic, and, hopefully, you know it.

"what have you seen that prompted your statement that tolerance has left the lexicon?"

Gosh, how long ago was it when "inclusive" and "tolerant" were the mantra words of the day.

Think back, think back.

To your point, let's begin with the derision of anyone or any idea which doesn't conform to a particular ideology. Getting to the point, included in that description, for practical purposes, is an emphasis on those people who, for many years, have stated and promoted that they're "inclusive, diverse, and tolerant".

They always forget to say: "As long as you agree with our ideology".

THAT is a critical point.

"I don't want to be a dumbass about whatever it is you're on about."

Well, you ARE being a dumbass, unless you just arrived from another planet.

My post was removed but I don't think I called anyone fat. My post was anti-Hitler and Hitler enablers. But I suppose some people are pro-Hitler and Hitler enablers so they got mad at me. Hit a bit too close to home I suppose.

If someone called me fat - that's okay - I am 179cm and range between 208-213lbs so I could stand to lose some weight. Still I do well with the ladies here - perhaps they like some love handles. I was 255lbs and it's the women who have got me down to ~210. Thanks ladies!

To call me a liar, you have to impune Motive. I make no money. Get No notoriety and people already have there minds mostly made up. NOTE that I didn't say anything Bad about BLM but about Mass Movements in general. For which ample proof exists in other ways. I have no way to profit or influence much of anything by my disclosure.
That my neighbor physically threatened me is what happened exactly. I'm not exagerating or making anything up. His offer was clear.

Not that it matters, but a simple white guy.

No, I'm not mad, but if you are going to call someone a liar, you should have a Little more to go on other than 'all internet comment is a fabrication'.....
If that were true, than nothing would ever be communicated by this means.

Believe me, I've been burned too. Just like everyone else, so I don't really blame someone. But I also look for motive. Money? Power? Influence? and more. I'm not running for office and don't collect $$ for 'hits' or 'clickthrus'........I didn't disparage BLM only mass movements.

Later indeed. I'm bushed and have had a busy day. Slowly fabricating parts for a cart for my shop vac. Neighbor gave me a dust removal cyclone and THAT's the issue. But with such an add-on, you have no worries clogging the vac filter. They are $$$ and clog very quickly. Now? 95%+ of stuff simply falls into a 5 gallon bucket while the remainder makes it to the vac......not much at all.

Link is to the ONEIDA version which is pretty much the same as the knock-off I was given. But I did a HARD PLUMB from vac to cyclone which is very short AND decreases pumping losses. I used a 5 gal bucked from the local home store (cheap!) and made a circle cutting jig for my router and made a fitted lid.

You are OK. The original person that questioned if I had simply made something up caught me at a bad time.
I TRY to lead an anger free life. Anger is FEAR OF A LOSS so I stop and think stuff thru from that aspect.....'How am I suffering a loss?' When I slow down, there IS NO LOSS and therefore no need for anger.

I'll go back thru the thread for a better take on the sequence of posts.......

If It wasn't 2300hrs, I'd pour a small dose of Scotch. Some less ambitious blend, perhaps.....Maybe some JW Blue? Or some JW 15 yr. Pure Malt......either would be fine.....

Have you heard my homily on "None are so blind as those who will not see"?

In the meantime, here's a more succinct report on the same censorship story (not even any talking heads to get in the way):

When my son was a kid, he asked me if he could pet a possum on our back fence that was baring it's teeth at us. I told he no. My son said, but Dad, he's smiling at me.

...were you able to suss out the true nature of this sub-rosa political thread?

nobody can argue against your taste in booze, that's a lock!

pretty ambitious project with your homemade cyclone system

I'll just keep dumping mine more often, but the utility in using it for a boat as it's intended, is self evident

allow me to counsel a bit against getting too worked up over remarks you'll encounter on-line ... I looked back through this thread and the good Lieutenant M. did express skepticism, and issued a warning addressed to me to not place too much stock in anecdotal evidence proffered on web-sites, which is solid advice that I already know, but to let that impugn your integrity is being too sensitive in my estimation, for whatever that's worth ... I crack wise about that very thing, maybe too often, and just hope folks are made of sterner stuff to take a jibe or two and laugh it off ... I'd like to think I can take it as well as give, yet get the 'itty bitty feelies' every here and there ... oh well

this run on sentence sans any grammatical structure has been brought to you by Trollhouse Cookies, the snack with a smack for yo' mamma's cr**k!

Am I 'oversensitive?' Probably....very Probably YES. Should I just let some remarks just pass?

Absolutely.

I guess that's gonna be my new years resolution. starting Early!

It's not the dumping of the vac that makes me nuts.....though it IS poorly made without even a seal between lid and top, but the FILTER which costs WAY too much.
Like Kodak from a century ago. GIVE you the camera! But when you have taken all 100 exposures?
Than you're gonna get the Bill.....But the camera was FREE!
Filters are 10$ EACH, On-Sale at the local Home Despot. Must buy the 2-pack. This is the basic single layer filter and not at all over the top priced. I thought they were MORE.

When I finish my cyclone, I'll replace the vac filter. the new filter should than last a LONG time Maybe I have a neighbor who will want the 2nd filter?

; )

had a family of those under the neighbors shed next door at the old casa`

she'd scoot out at dusk looking for bugs to eat with the whole fam damnly on her back ... they won't play dead when the kits, pups, or whatever you call the little buggers are piggy backing, they just hiss and grin and try to trot away

I find that long pink tail they have to be mondo creepy

tut tut, I said two sensitive not overly [misspelling intended]

I've happily used doubled or tripled up nylons for the shop vac at $5 for six pairs from the dollar store ... works fine for outdoor use... save the HEPA stuff for when you're closed in

speaking of cameras, I found an old Polaroid Impulse in one of the boxes I finally went through that we stacked in the garage from moving 28 months ago ... it seems to still have some battery left! pressed a button and the flash popped up ... maybe I'll try a snapshot later today ... can't remember where the hell it came from. that should bug me the rest of the day

hmm

I have an ancient......like maybe nearly 60 years old Polaroid 95, the 'Land Camera'.....
It was ROLL film and available in B&W only. And I doubt can now be found anywhere except Maybe as New-Old-Stock and automatically suspect.

This was a good picture taker last time I found film.......Which comes with the 'tube' of fixer which you apply to the print after it is developed.

Best of luck finding film and IF you do, it'll probablby be expensive. I have no idea what film the Impulse took.....Time for you to do some research...

there's already film in it! the battery is part of the film 'cartridge'

it has to have been in there for 12+ years!!

that's why I was so surprised pushing that button, seeing a little red light come on, and having the flash mechanism pop up

I do remember a high price tag for the film cartridge but not the amount

whatever it was it's multiples of that now for sure

Around our house, we're vegetarian. But Ms. CfL accidentally ordered the mashed potatoes with turkey gravy (rather than mushroom gravy). So, despite our preferences, we will not be wasting food and will consume the turkey gravy (while at the same time feeling sorry for Mr. Turkey). As you say, beggars can't be choosers. ;-)

Everyone knows to be critical of China - sadly a bunch of brainwashed people on this board are not aware that we need to be critical of the USA.

Let's turn to YOU Carl. I'll add one word

"you seem to [NEVER] be critical of the USA all the time, yet you NEVER point out the severe inequities of the place you live."

I wish I could be you and just live in La La Land that the USA is without flaws. Drinking that Orange Kool-Aid the last 4 years eh?

Well, since you ask.
Of course the system in the USA is corrupt. The extreme media bias, the brainwashing of the masses, the promised handouts to the poor for their vote, the never ending change in how behind the scene politics are run.
The issue with your posts is that you live in an area with tremendous inequities, yet you ONLY post negativity laden messages that are totally anti this present administration . Is this your civic duty?

Here is the issue.... You dont live here, you live elsewhere....you take pot shots at the USA almost every chance you get. Yet, you never have any posts exposing the corruption in your part of the world.

You are anti USA. Yet, you dont have a negative word about your own home in which you live ......

as usual 51 didn't come up with anything original in his post, he simply tried 'rifffing' on my mention of 'dumbass' ... I've found that most individuals featuring arrested development in their BPD have great difficulty achieving the level of self awareness to recognize when another uses self deprecation as a tool for communication or self referential humor, as this tends to put others at ease, whereas for those sporting fragile ego constructs it is simply alien to them ... they cannot conceive of it because that would be anathema to their invented personality, while being an 'admission of weakness', or invitation for others to attack their baseless inflated self worth. these types generally trend towards appeals to authority and 'run in a pack' for an extra safety level, or in layman's terms act like 'toadies'

there is no honor wearing badges proffered by toadies. I'm sure there's something missing in this analysis, but for now ...

best regards,

Maybe you don't realize this but I am a guest in Hong Kong and Hong Kong isn't China. Leanring about the world outside the US is helpful.

I am not Chinese and not Born in China - I was born in Canada - my Mom is Welsh. I have lived in Canada, Australia, Wales, South Korea, China, and Hong Kong. I have been to the USA too many times to count. My parents lived half the year in the USA - we are on the border - we get all your media, shows. So if anyone knows about the USA it's Canadians.

I am critical of all presidents in the USA not just Trump. The difference is that with Trump I was critical of him as a human being and the hypocrisy of so called Christians who support a man who uses Christianity as a mere prop to dupe people.

That may surprise you because I am an atheist so I don't believe in any religion but it bothers me almost more than anything else when some USES a religion and people's faith to get them to part with their money and even their integrity to their belief system.

China is a sleeping dragon that America chose to wake and do business with - President Nixon opened the door to China. America taught China American capitalism and 40 years later complain when China out capitalists the US.

China doesn't have a leader who says idiotic things every single day so there is less to "pick-on".

Hong Kong's freedoms are disappearing daily - but it's not like China didn't warn them. In 1997 China told HK that it would be one country and two systems until 2047. The whole world knows this - it is a written agreement. In 2047 it will be one country and one system the Chinese system. It is 2020 and the move has begun to get ready for that 2047 change.

I lived in China - have you? Many Americans have moved to China - the bogeyman of China isn't a Bogeyman for people who actually moved there and lived there. Yes there are less freedoms but the day to day life isn't really impacted the way the news media portrays.

I also criticize Canada and leaders whether they are on the far left, left center, center, right center, or far right. I criticize the guy I vote for and don't blindly follow a team. I recently blasted Joe Biden on this forum until it was taken down. In Canada I have voted for 4 political parties out of the 6. One party only runs in Quebec so they are not on the ticket in BC. And the newer right wing party is basically the KKK. So the 4 major parties have won my vote at least once.

The president in your country is an EMPLOYEE - he is not an elected King for 4 years. You should be critical of your employees.

China has a dictator - criticize him all you like but nothing will change. To change a dictator requires governments to use a carrot and stick approach - and with a massive economy and massive population and massive military - the carrot is probably the better approach. Nuance negotiations and allowing China to save face. In other words intricate negotiations are required by people who actually read books on Chinese culture and listen to advisors on how to deal with China. Blundering in like a bull in a China shop is not the way to go. And if your leader is a bull - then at least hire people who know something not just your kids and their husbands and wives.

Be critical of everyone. This is an English speaking board and the topics are usually focused on North American issues.

America is "fixable" in the sense that people can run for office and vote for people who actually want to improve the country - policies can be enacted - you can arrest the corrupt. Being critical of the USA can shine a light on problems and those problems can actually be solved.

You can't do that in China. I mean you can a little bit but at the end of the day - the Red Party rules and what they say goes. It's not "fixable" through grassroots movements because if you stepo out of line they'll shoot you and while they shoot unarmed protesters and black people for kicks in the US - at least those bad cops are held accountable (at least some of the time). In China - it is state ordered.

What happens in America has a much larger effect on Canada and Europe as well. That is why outsiders who are allied (mostly) with the US are vocal. When idiotic tariffs are put on Canadian Softwood Lumber or Aluminum etc a it affects us and our jobs. If it is one party in your country who keeps going against international law and always loses in court on the same thing over and over and over again - it affects us. We become more engaged in what happens down there.

Lastly, I have a lot of American friends who say the same thing on my Facebook page. If I were American saying these things would you still have an issue? Is it the message or the messenger? Over 80 million Americans voted against Trump. You have many Americans born and raised who say the exact same things I do and are far FAR more critical of America's leadership than I.
