My back yard has been deer central all day.

Was out early, hiked a section of the Montour Trail with my sister. There were more deer in the yard than I could count.
Every time I look out the back window, there are at least 3 to 4 deer either grazing or bedded down.
They like us. They really like us.

I don't approach the deer, and I've never had a tick on me in my life.
Maybe they know it ticks me off.

I think that's pretty cool to have deer in your yard. Well, unless they're pooping and eating your flora.

Either way, it beats having a bobcat walking along the top of the fence. Holy crap! 20 years - no bobcats. The past two months - I've seen 'em three times. This is not good.

yea, keep telling yourself that they like you. They crap all over the lawn, no respect for keeping it all in the woods. And the urine kills the grass and the crap ends up on the lawnmower tires. Urine is THE best weed killer. They are looking for food and keep coming back to my next door neighbors house as she feeds them every day out of her front door. They have to cross our lawn to get to her house. There are frequent sightings of deer killing on the side of the roads. They own the earth, we are just visitors that pay the taxes.

We have a Coyote in our woods somewhere, 1st time in 16 years I've seen one and it is big and fat. The Foxes have always been here. These are rarely seen and only in the sunrise hours. Maybe they could all get together with the deer sometime and have breakfast.

I found a tick in my scalp once after cutting the grass but the Doc said I was ok. Connecticut ain't too far from jersey.

They can piss where they want, I'm not particular about my lawn.
We aren't allowed to feed them by local ordinance but I have a flower bed left over from the PO of the house, and I let it grow wild all year. There is also a great deal of shrubbery. Maybe the PO got it from Roger the Shrubber, but you could tell I didn't plant it because it's still alive. And thriving.
I'll admit, I'm deliberately leaving a lot of greenery uncut and untrimmed and I'm feeding the deer sub-rosa.
We've been put on notice that coyote are here but I've yet to see one and I'm up before the sun nearly every day. We have a screened in back porch at ground level and I won't let the cats out there at night or till after sunrise. I don't think a coyote could get through the chicken wire I have tacked up around the outside of the porch but who knows?

...especially right now as we are getting into the beginning of mating-season. You've got to be really careful driving at night. I'm in a fairly suburban area, but I have 13 acres, my neighbor's lot is another 4+, and we are directly adjacent to a 500 acre country club (that used to be part of the farm that we have pieces of). There is also a (now abandoned) RR easement that runs behind the entire area, so they've got lots of cover/habitat. They like to "hang" with the goats and donkey.

What really surprised me--I was out riding my horse the other evening and encountered a covey of quail. Had to be at least a dozen birds. The country club next door is named Quail Hollow (and it used to be a hunting club prior to them putting in the two golf courses), but quail are few and far-between these days (at least around here). They're a very sensitive/delicate species, in terms of environmental and predator conditions, so it was nice to see them.

Our biggest PITA (in terms of wildlife) are the Canada geese. There's a zillion of them, they crap everywhere, will decimate a lawn, and routinely block traffic at their leisure. ZERO regard for humans--no fear at all.

The City of Pittsburgh runs a water-spraying truck on the North Shore Riverwalk at least once every day to hose off the goose shit.
Deer Lakes park near Greensburg was so overrun with geese--people fed the geese in defiance of park rules and the birds no longer migrated--that it invited local hunters to come in and shoot some. As you might imagine, there was no shortage of macho types amped up for the thrill of hunting tame geese. TV news interviewed a group of them wearing their best camo gear. Go get 'em, boyz!
Of course the real culprits were the people who fed the geese. They weren't doing those poor birds any favors.

I liked Sally right fine in Smokey and the Bandit.
For the record, she is 10 years older than Tom Hanks.

Where I worked they had a pond where the geese used to flock back to. I was only 8 miles to work and could always see them flying over my house from somewhere else back to the pond. The pond was far enough from our building that they never bothered anyone or pooped. I used to go out for breaks to watch them float and do their thing.

People feed them, and the winters are getting warm enough that lakes and rivers seldom freeze. Plenty of fish, etc.
The geese don't bother me, even when I used to walk the North Shore on my lunch hour. Tough to navigate between the piles of goose shit, but that just added to my workout.
Just an aside...I used to catch the bus at the corner of a fairly busy suburban intersection every morning. Lo and behold, there's a blue heron circling almost every morning.
Guy had a small fish pond in his backyard on the corner opposite the bus stop. The heron were eating his fish.
That pond has since been filled in.

Don't under estimate a coyote.
They ripped the siding off of a shed at the back of my property while getting to the critters nesting under the shed.
Bad ass animals.

Loni Anderson is a cartoon caricature of a good-looking woman. That's why she played Jennifer on "WKRP". The whole show was a cartoon caricature of life in a small radio station.

That was a great show!

We also have coyotes in the area, but "black kitty" is still around. Cats can climb tree. I don't think that coyotes can climb. I go out with my dogs in our fenced back yard early AM to make sure it's secure.

...I worked for a chemical company, at their main R&D center, and every building on the campus had its own "pond". Most people thought that they were "decorative" (which they were), but they were all tied to the fire-suppression systems and could be pumped dry in a matter of minutes in the event of an accident (the real reason they were there).

The geese were so thick, that the grounds-crew had to hose the sidewalks and parking lots daily, and they fed them to keep them from destroying the grass--after several attempts at replacing sod. The geese just looked at new sod like a freshly re-stocked buffet LOL.
