...and please provide an OBJECTIVE, relevant response.

What's up with Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo? Why has he not resigned, been asked to resign, or fired? Is it just because he is black?

He joined the force in 1989 as a patrol officer, and has subsequently been promoted to Chief of Police. Along the way, he was involved in a civil suit against the dept. in 2007 for racial discrimination. In 2012 he was placed in charge of the dept's Internal Affairs Unit--responsible for investigating incidents of officer misconduct, before being promoted to Chief of Police in 2017.

How can he NOT be held even remotely accountable for this incident? It's not like he joined the force just last year and inherited this systemic problem? His 30+ year career with the force says otherwise.

Why is he still on the job?

...police chiefs in other cities have recently been terminated, or resigned for far lesser "issues" than an officer under their direct command murdering a suspect in the street. The simple fact that an officer with as many complaints/disciplinary actions as Chauvin is still on the force (and a trainer, at that) clearly indicates a lack of leadership, or gross incompetence. Especially with respect to a police chief that spent the previous 5 years of his career allegedly investigating "bad" cops as head of the Internal Affairs Unit.

Full article linked, but relevant excerpt below:

"We are going to dismantle the Minneapolis Police Department," Jeremiah Ellison, a member of the City Council, said on Twitter this week. "And when we're done, we're not simply gonna glue it back together," he added. "We are going to dramatically rethink how we approach public safety and emergency response."

At least three others, including the City Council president, Lisa Bender, have also called for taking the Police Department apart.

My son is a sergeant with the State Police. I think that he has been a cop 8 years or so. He hasn't shot anyone or been involved when anyone else did. Shootings are rarer than you might think.

I watch Blue Bloods. Danny shoots someone every other day. It's entertaining, but the real experience is fairly rare.

In short, do everything possible EXCEPT to place the blame where it belongs: The so-called leadership of the City of Minneapolis.

...that is the most current and correct recipe. Pretty clearly defines the current purpose of unions and the reason that I dislike them so much.

At one point they fought for fair wages/benefits, and worker safety. Now all they do is protect the worthless and fund their own greed and corruption. Union management is as bad as the evil corporate management that they supposedly protect their members from. Most of the last two generations of my family were all members, and the few that are still living just laugh about the retirement packages they have, because no future employee in any industry will ever see the kind of benefits that they receive--they know they bled their employers dry. They knew it was virtually impossible to get fired--ever, and the longer you hung around, the less you had to do, to earn more $$$--automatically, with every new contract and year of service. Once you became a "short-timer", approaching retirement, all you had to do was show-up, at least a few days a week. They sit back and laugh--all the way to the bank.

...he has a 30+ year career with the force--check. He has brought race-relations/discrimination issues to light via a civil lawsuit against the force in 2007--check. In 2012 he was placed in charge of the Internal Affairs Unit to investigate officer misconduct--check. He was subsequently promoted to Chief of Police (2017), which places him in direct command of all officers on the force, and responsible for the training, conduct, and discipline of all officers under his command--check.

Under his command, with his extensive career experience, and awareness of racial issues between the force and the public, one of his officers murders a suspect in a public street in broad daylight--check.

AFAIK Chief of Police is not a union position, so he is not protected by the union.

So what is the justification for him remaining in his current position? That was my question--looking for an objective answer. I can't come up with one. I wasn't aware that gross incompetence was a desirable quality for a leadership position, or that total lack of accountability was just another "perk". And please don't delude yourself--if he were white, the protesters would have burned his house down by now, and be demanding charges filed against him, personally, as well as the officers involved.

Even the Minneapolis City Council is considering measures to totally dismantle the entire police department (refer to my post above).

Of course not. I'm just mentioning some of the terrible and tragic crimes people have been committing en masse in the name of "justice".

It's "sarcasm".

In truth, a much better solution would be for the people of Minneapolis to demand the entire city council, mayor and police chief to resign, and hold a special election to replace them.

Of course, that won't happen. Rather, members of the city council are promoting the idea of dismantling the police department and starting over with a new, kinder, gentler police department. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up!

...just last night, I read an article containing an interview with one of the city council members (supporting the dissolution of the police force) that stated that she, as well as other council members, and the mayor, have been fiercely advocating police reform since the last major, publicized, police-killing in 2015, but that the police union "un-did" everything they proposed or achieved--including the termination/discipline of officers.

Essentially, she is saying that the police union in Minneapolis is more powerful than the entire city government--good to know!

...Dems have controlled all aspects of Minneapolis city government for at least the past 6 decades. The particular council member that they interviewed for the article was a black woman (D) who has held office for a decade.

The police chief (that I so inappropriately question his competency) is a black 30-year veteran on the force.

Something is clearly wrong with Minneapolis, as a whole.

Have you ever heard of "Minnesota nice"? A long long time ago, I worked for a Minnesota company and advocated firing poor performers. People thought I was nuts.

There was a systemic lack of supervision in this case, of the police, the chief and the people who supervise the chief. Ultimately, the voters.

The problem with the police is the same as the problem with priests, ministers and Boy Scout leaders. The job attracts good applicants, of course, and applicants with the the wrong background and motives. The hiring process needs to weed out people who want to be a cop in order to carry a weapon and exercise dominance over others, and the supervisory procedures need to give managers the authority to fire those who abuse their authority, with zero tolerance. There is no retraining a racist or an abuser. Just cut him loose.

The problem with the police is that they don't police much anymore

it might even seem that with the modern practice of military hand me downs going to so many police forces, that militarization came with it

and yes to your point about command structure

the voter responsibility issue is pretty complex so where the buck stops isn't simple ... but where it doesn't speaks volumes

so they don't get sued for a mistake, absent evil intent or really bad recklessness? Maybe we should give the same kind of immunity to their supervisors. An experienced police captain should be able to fire someone in his or her judgment in the interest of protecting the public.

And thank you for your thoughtful reply.

Seems like a valid option. And again, we at least have to try. As it's said, "the perfect is the enemy of the good".

you can't get rid of them because of the union. Or at least they make it really difficult.

Get rid of unions when the employees are paid by taxpayer money.

Excellent thought! And do-able.

And while we're at it, cut the number of administrative staff by half - we'll never miss 'em!

I've been saying it for decades. I've never understood unions when on the public dole. They should be accountable for performance as a professional career working stiff, just like I am in the private sector.
