I had to drive a leased '15 100 miles back to the dealer for a relative.

Pillowy ride, numb steering and poor handling reminded me of a '78 Buick I once had. At least with the Buick it was possible to stretch out in back and have her leave footprints in the headliner.

I've had the Entry Level Camry for 13 years, great, reliable car. nt, posted on June 10, 2017 at 06:29:06

I've owned 3 Camry's over the decades including a "SE" model. Family has owned a few too including my sister who owns a 2 year old Camry SE. While the SE models are a little stiffer and handle a little better and don't feel quite as 'floaty' as the others, they are definitely not sport sedans.

BMW, Audi, Mercedes, VW, have nothing to worry about from Toyota in that segment. The Camry is a nice family car, the SE adds a little sport sedan wannabe facelift.

When I think of true entry level sport sedans I think of BMW 3-series, Audi A3/A4, Mercedes C300, and maybe a couple VW models. Camry SE doesn't come to mind.

Just ribbing you! Nothing wrong with the Camry. They're solid cars, probably the most trouble-free and long term reliable I have ever owned.

It looks like the 2018's are actually being equipped with engines as standard equipment. Cool! Maybe they'll have enough power now to get the hell out of the left lane.

Around here, Camry drivers are only slightly less worse than minivan drivers. And I'll refrain from posting the 4 letter words needed to describe Prius drivers....

Just as a comment about that "feel", I used to have an early Acura Legend. It was an '89. Nice car. Chicks dug it. I especially liked the 4-settings 7-band equalizer. ;) It drove and handled well. When it came time to get new tires, I made the mistake of getting Pirelli's. The car suddenly felt like I was driving on balloons - kind of like the old Buicks and Cadillacs. I could NOT get rid of those tires fast enough.

All I'm sayin' is that the ride and handling has a LOT to do with the tires.

:)

Absolutely. IMHO there's no perfect tire. You pay the price of a harsher ride with low profile tires and an increased chance of a blow-out when you hit a bump in the road. I know, it happened to me but fortunately my low profile tires were run-flats.... which have other issues I won't go into here. In this case, I was able to get to where I needed to be on time because I was able to drive on the run-flats.

Taller sidewalls typically have a nicer ride. I experienced this in another vehicle identical to mine but with their 'standard' tires vs the low profiles I had on mine. Quieter too.

I had a 1993 Toyota Camry SE with manual transmission. I enjoyed that car a lot but thinking back, it was nothing like a true sport sedan like an Audi or BMW.

I think every tire brand has had good and not so good formulations over the years. I really loved the Pirelli's on my old VW GTi but they wore out fast. The price you pay for sticky rubber I guess.

Never seen anybody so excited about a plain Jane family car. Toyota is a good brand, but it's also known as a simple family car brand for the most part (particularly the 4 door variants).
Assuming you are in some way, directly or indirectly, gainfully employed by Toyota?

Good reliable car, we kept ours almost as long as you.

I think the Australian sold cars had stiffer suspension that in the USA. Ours was the fleet car version and didn't have ABS brakes.

My WIfe's '07 Camry had a water pump die at about 40k to 45k range. I had a BOSCH pump put in. No idea who actually made it, but 60k+ later, it's still good.
Window Visors were JUNK. So bad that I couldn't even source 'em at a Junk Yard. Toyota wanted north of 100$ each so I said Screw It. Later? Recalled and new visors installed Gratis.
Now the Motor. Some assembly problem led to HUGE oil consumption issues. I think some people abuse there motors. We had the 'test' and didn't use hardly ANY oil so were 'cleared' for now. I used nothing BUT good Synthetic since Day 1 and changed at factory Intervals. (7500 miles?)
Car continues in Service with Sis-In-Law and driven by the goofy kid, who actually takes CARE of her car.
Own a 'Lament one year newer. Same size engine and same type 5 speed tranny. But the Honda seems to have a better 4 cyl motor. Shifts down a LOT less and can make it up some grades in cruise without Drama. Camry would shift down if you stuck your arm out the window creating extra drag. Similar HP to the Honda and better aerodynamics. For long distance travel, I suspect the V-6 would have been the better choice in the Camry.

When cars comes out with a new generation.. NEVER BUY the FIRST YEAR of a NEW GENERATION!..

I've been buying Camrys since 1990 and have never had any problems with any of them! You can get 500,000 to 1,000,000 miles out these Camrys if you take care of them!

One of the very best cars on the road if you ask me!

Brother in law just bought a '17 Accord right from the 'bottom' of the line. Amazing content and considerng it is a FRACTION of the cost of a similar Acura from about '87, being faster, more power, better economy, more space inside, has ABS, better safety features and sells for LESS than 1/2 the inflation adjusted price?

Wife's '16 Mazda6 is also amazingly well equipped for a bottom of the line automotilbe. Just like the Accord, it has Bluetooth for phone and music. Some differences include built in Navigation which needs only a chip install to function.

The Accord has a turbo engine and all turbo engines made today have a lot problems just like they did in the past!

I would never buy a car with a turbo engine!

Buddy bought an early Nissan Pulsar NX with Turbo motor. It lasted only a few months before Nissan issued a modification kit to convert center bearing to Water Cooled. This is 30 or more years ago.

Problem with Turbo Motors, as I view it, is that people are HARD on the equipment and don't treat the engine right. Oil changes with the BEST available is mandatory. Coking of the center bearing can result from early shutoff without allowing a few minutes of cool-down / spin-down for the turbo. Drive 70+ on the freeway, exit to a restaurant and shut it off on a 100f day? A recipe for short turbo life.

I've been passed on the street by guys who had installed elaborate Turbo Systems who STILL didn't know what they were doing. You can tell by the fact that they fast idle from a stop light, shift and you can HEAR the pop of the wastegate. Way too aggressive a boost curve! Motors might last 10,000 miles. Less if they do not change the oil and continue to drive like Idiots.

Long Haul Trucks which DEPEND on such motors routinely are equipped with Exhaust Gas Temp gauges and OIL Temp gauges.

If boost is kept fairly low, maybe 6psi to 9psi, and engine compression is also low, I don't see why HONDA reliability should suffer. I've been wrong before!

*Boy, was I wrong: Honda 2.0 Turbo in the Civic R Type is OVER 300hp and OVER 20 psi boost.
That's a bunch and I can see engine lifetime suffering as a result. *

Brother owns the 409 Scorpion Engine in his F350. A MONSTER Diesel with over 800ft/lb of twist. OH! that's the 6.7 V-8 ... 409 just sounds so much cooler.
He was a long haul trucker and I'll personally guarantee this thing goes the distance. Towing a house. This engine is a 16:1 CR which is low by non-turbo diesel standards, where I'm used to seeing around 20:1 as the norm. But it IS aggressively Turbo'd.

I took a ride in a 2018 Camry XLE 4 cylinder and I see why Ed Wallace was raving about this car, it rides as good as my friend's new BMW 7 Series!

The 4 cylinder engine feels much more like a V6, the power of this engine will shock you!

The Camry is very quiet inside the cabin, almost as quiet as the BMW!

I also thought the seat Comfort in the Camry was on the same level as in the BMW 7 Series too!

The stereo in the BMW sounded a little better but was very very close! The JBL stereo in the Camry is really good, it will shock you how good it sounds!

They should call this car.. Lexus Camry!
